Re: cut strips from deck boards?

Machining 20' 4x4s seems like a lot of work ! Especially with a circular saw. I mainly use them for paddle blanks, but wouldn't have any issue milling them down to strips for a feature that doesn't require full length. I am a kayaker, so there's lots of opportunity on the decks for features using s...

Re: cut strips from deck boards?

The "deck" aspect isn't the obstacle, its the quality of lumber available through the big-box stores ... I used clear deck boards from an independent lumberyard ... they even had them in 20' lengths, although at the time, I was hauling them on the roof of a Honda Accord, so had to get them...

Re: Have you ever built a canoe for a restaurant?

Last I checked, the only place you can get Raka products is from Raka's Florida location. But he'll probably ship it to you. I've ordered my epoxy from him and even with shipping to Canada (as a hazardous substance) and customs brokerage fees, it was still cost effective. Simple glass fabric should ...

Re: Outer stem protector

BellGuy ... wouldn't you need a flat surface of some width, on the stem, to receive the brass strip? Which means the stem has to be a certain width, to accomodate that flat section. How do you deal with glass around those angular corners, or do you not bother to glass the flat? How "sharp"...

Re: Outer stem protector

You're right, Bellguy ... brass is a personal preference ... I meant as a protective layer in addition to glass. As you note, bias cut cloth is essential. But a trick to make it even easier is to stretch it length-wise just a bit as you lay it on and it will wrap itself right around the stem. In my ...

Re: Coaming material thickness

Kayakcraft does refer to using plywood ... I deviated from the plan for both the coaming, and the coaming recess. For the recess and coaming riser, I used the method described in Nick Schade's "The Stripbuilt Sea Kayak" and for the coaming lip I just made it up as I went along. If you deci...

Re: Show us your decks

Cruiser, that is spectacular. Simple, but very VERY effective.

I have plans for the Kipawa as well, looking forward to starting. (though they've been sitting on my shelf for several years now)

Re: Coaming material thickness

Whose coaming construction method are you using? I didn't use plywood at all.
1/4" cedar strips for the riser, and a lamination of cedar, ash and walnut for the coaming lip, that ended up being a little over 1/4" thick

Re: Outer stem protector

Brass is overkill, but glass is a necessity, IMO. Docks aren't always available, and aren't always the easiest method to launch even if they are available. On my Endeavour kayak, I wrapped the glass around the stem from each side by about 3", while glassing the hull. Then, when that was suffici...

Re: Determining cockpit location in Resolute kayak

Denis, I remember that paddle well ... we almost sunk Glens new boat ... I'll bet it hasn't been that low in the water since. Gary, a sprayskirt will not seal, if your coaming rim follows the keyhole shape, which is why most keyhole cockpits use wings inside of the oval lip (as in Denis' picture) to...

Re: Attaching wood kayak bulkheads with silicone caulk?

I don't know about the transparent part, but Beckson, Viking, and West Marine all make/carry the round threaded deck plates.

Re: Attaching wood kayak bulkheads with silicone caulk?

Gary; I've used silicone on the rear bulkhead, as there is never any force or pressure on that one. I trimmed the bulkhead panel (stripped) so there was about 1/8" clearance all around, then tacked it in place with a few beads of caulking, then when those were cured, filled in the remaining gap...

Nice work ... that is gorgeous.

Is it your own design, or were you working from a set of plans?

Re: Determining cockpit location in Resolute kayak

The vertical cedarstrip/laminate coaming is a feature I'd like to duplicate. I'm trimming the boat in cherry, so the 1/8" inside laminate would be cherry. Your ash laminate piece appears to be about 2" deep ... Oooh, nice … cherry …. Fair warning, my recess/coaming modifications accounted...

Re: Determining cockpit location in Resolute kayak

Gary, what a great place to have a workshop … all that inspiration around you … BTW, I do a lot of paddling on Rice Lake, ON, where we have a cottage. It’s directly south of Peterborough, home of another museum you might be familiar with. What is the length of your cockpit? Will my 32" long coc...
