Sprouting

I, my wife and our baby daughter went canoe camping this September for 2 weeks in Algonquin Park and absolutely loved it. However, we would have also really loved having fresh veggies by the second week, and I just recently came across this website where the couple do sprouting on their trips. We do...

Redwood was what I chose to make the hull of my Hiawatha with (still under construction). You can check out the photos in the Projects directory. According to Ted's book redwood is more splintery than cedar and does not have the variations in the color as does wrc. However, the consistency in the co...

Redwood Hiawatha in the making

I started this project (my first woodstrip) in December of '03, and I am at the stage of sanding and finishing the inside. At the moment, the project is on hold due to other home-remodeling projects which have taken precedence, but I hope to get back to finishing the canoe by next spring (2005) at t...

Auto Clear instead of varnish?

I came across the webpage of a guy out in B.C. who has a strip-kayak business. He uses 'Sikkens Auto Clear' claiming that it provides superior protection from UV compared to varnish, and resistant to fade. Not having finished my first canoe I cannot comment on either, but I'm very curious to hear wh...

There is also the option to inlay a design. I mention this because I ran across the following page some time back describing the process for an indian head inlay:

I definitely second Glen's recommendation. And Home Depot sells the 7 1/4" blade.

Thank you for the compliments. Thank you Jeff for the advice, I will try it. I started building this canoe before my wife got pregnant.... she is expecting any day now. The baby is almost finished, but not the boat! It has been a great project to work on however, and I've been learning a lot t...

Redwood Hiawatha progress

Well, after a couple days of stressful fiberglassing a couple weeks ago, I have the outside glassed. Well... maybe not quite. Unfortunately there were about 3 spots which must have been missed in the 3rd coat of epoxy, where I can somewhat feel the weave. So I decided to sand the whole canoe and app...

I came across this page of a cedar canoe being fitted with walnut gunwales and stems, complemented with cherry decks and yoke. To me, the choice in wood complement each other very nicely:

Getting a straight keel line

Thought I'd share another method I used lately, this time to obtain a straight cut lline down the middle of the hull after I finished laying the strips on one side. Basically, I believe I expanded on Ted Moore's method of using the chisel, then the plane. Where I deviated was in using the plane... I...

Dean,

When the bungees are removed, the hull floats about 1/4" above the forms, but I had the same thing happen when I was using only clamps to glue the strips down. Now that I'm gluing up the strips on the last side to the keel line, it is keeping the hull down against the molds.

Using bungie cords

Having started laying the strips in March, I am finally nearing the completion of this stage on my first redwood canoe! However, after I passed the bilge I started having difficulties keeping the hull tight against the station molds, especially when I applied outward pressure when gluing up the stri...

Canoe sides bowing outwards while stripping football section

Hi all, My first time posting, although I have been reading this board for the last several months. I am currently building my first woodstrip canoe, a redwood Hiawatha, which I started in December. Progress is sometimes slow, but enjoyable. The canoe is at the stage where the football area of the b...
