Good tips Asa - I think that sanding is the least favorite part of woodworking for me, but a neccesary evil nonetheless! Cant wait to get to that part of the build myself :sleepy One thing I use for my ROS is a "Sander Sitter" it allows you you to set down the sander while it is still runn...

Thanks for the suggestion on the router Jim - Looks nice and not much extra $$$ over the Porter Cable, but you get the 3rd base with it. I will take a look at that one for sure!

That's a nice looking pack - but your right - costly! If you are looking at that, I dont think this will interest you but, I have always used Dry Bags with backpack straps on them for canoe tripping. I have used ones from NRS, Cabela's, LL Beans and had good luck with them. They dont have anything a...

Edge of Molds

I am finally getting back into my Prospector build after a long time away and a location change and this past weekend was spent relocating the strongback and mounting my forms. After all was set up and I was checking the curves with a batten, I noticed that the strip would sit pretty flat the whole ...

I just did mine not too long ago and I used a 4.5' piece of Sch. 80 PVC pipe with a cap at one end and rags stuffed around the teapot at the other end. I steamed 7 strips (6 ash, 1 cedar (to protect the ash from clamp marks)) and found that 15 minutes once she was up to full steam (pardon the pun) t...

Repairing Mold Forms

I recently had to repair a few of my mold forms due to dropping them on the way downstairs. I checked the posts in this forum and saw some ideas of iron-on edging and that really didn't help me because they were damaged in the bottom corner of the "mushroom cap" so to speak, so I had no ed...

Those pictures help out a lot. Seems like it would be easier to do it before rather that having to work in some very tight spaces. Thanks for the help!

Inside of inner stem

I am getting ready to start the steaming, bending and shaping of my stems for a 16' Prospector and I have read and re-read the section in "canoecraft" on it, but one thing is still a little fuzzy to me. The book mentions some shaping to a portion of the inside of the inner stem, as some of...

Pre-Cut Station Molds

Just wondering if anyone out there has used pre-cut station molds before? I am new to canoe building and will be starting a 16' Prospector very soon (as soon as I finish the strongback) and thought they might be worth the extra cost to save some time and worry about getting them exact myself. After ...
