Re: alternative to closing hull with "foot ball"

I don't build canoes anymore, but I lurk here daily. My passion is now Adirondack guideboats, planked traditionally or stripped. I built a 15-foot Bob's Special several years ago with a bottom closure design I saw on the kayak forum. Rather than try to post a picture, I have a link to my web site (a...

Re: How many strips to build a canoe?

Hi Brian - Thanks for the reply. That's sort of what I thought, but the math or strip size is off. Someone asked me, and I told them to measure from sheer to sheer across the bottom, then divide by 5/8. If you start with 3/4 inch wide strips 1/4 inch thick with 1/4 inch bead and cove, the radius of ...

How many strips to build a canoe?

Some years back, there was a post, possibly here, on how to figure out/calculate how many strips are needed for a canoe build. I realize that as stripping gets closer to the bottom, the strips are shorter. Maybe it was how many linear feet of strips required? Any ideas?

Thanx,

Re: Shaping Stems. Need Guidence

Shaping the stems is one of the easier parts of stripping a canoe. Here is how I did it.

I round over everything for a much softer look. Here is a link to my web site for a discussion on gunwales.

Re: How far is too far with sanding

When you are doing the fill coats, you will get to a point, usually after the third fill, where you see the weave is filled. But then you sand it, essentially converting the last coat to sanding dust which is now no longer on the boat. My rule of thumb is when I reach the assumed last fill coat, I s...

Re: Water based varnish

Snowman - We bought a quart each of the gloss and matte finish. We used the matte on the inside, and it turned out real nice. This is in contrast to the outside, where we used the gloss. We used the included cross linker for both. It seems that the gloss dries too fast to allow the varnish to flow o...

Here's another way... http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a362/jmichne/MVC-206S.jpg Details of how I made it are on my web site, http://michneboat.com. Student-built canoe

A little over a year ago I was asked by my club, the Northeastern Woodworkers Association (NWA), to teach another course in building a strip-built canoe. The previous course in '06 was held in my home shop - this one would be taught at the NWA Education Center shop, located near Albany, NY. The purp...

Snowman -
I ordered the WR-LPU from Jamestown Distributors. It should be here late this week or early next. I'll post the results when the job is done.

Water based varnish

We are building a student canoe in the club shop. The shop is a corner of a much larger building where precision manufacturing is done. We are getting close to the varnish stage, and I am afraid the landlord might object to the VOC fumes from the oil-based varnish I normally use for boats. A water b...

Re: Canoe general seat positions

Thanks for the replies, guys. Being able to adjust trim via a slider or different mounting holes are both interesting suggestions.

All the best, and thanks again,
John
