same thing

I did the same as Tim, built a low hanging rack from the ceiling to miss the GD. . Also a few 3' furring strips tacked across the strongback makes useful storage for the next few strips on each side of the hull.

striping tape

Get the 1/4 inch striping tape to mask the stem, then build it back using regular masking tape and paper.

I'll be there

My trip partner, Larry Ricker (aka Nibimocs) is presenting pictures on our Pukaskwa Coast paddle last summer.

A trip report with some pics is available at Duckworks:

I don't think so. I'd just set up a bending jig and laminate 4 1/4" pieces using epoxy glue.

I marked the seats dirrectly on the 1 1/2 inch by 2 inch ash balnks. The contour is on the 2-inch face. I marked the centerline and the top of each contour. . Am I to under stand you are cutting the contoured frame from solid stock? Any curved seat I have seen was made from 1/4" laminated stri...

oil finish

If you can find Watco natural exterior oil it's the goods. I mixed my own, tung, linseed and spirits. Alls you do is saturate a napless rag (like t shirt material) and rub it on. When that soaks in rub more on. Keep at it until the wood no longer soaks it up. Then buff any wet spots with a dry rag. ...

I wouldn't

My recommendation is "Don't Do It" You are setting yourself up for headaches. Sanding and refinishing every year.

I left mine bare and just oil them once or twice a year.

If the resin looks good after application but THEN starts to creep (orange peel?) I would suspect amine contamination.

Allow the epoxy to cure and wash off with amonia solution. Then sand and apply final coat.

Nice looking work Glen. A couple of questions. From the pics it looks like the skeg is mounted just behind the cockpit. What is the spacing from the stern? Why mounted so far forward? The SS cable runs through a plastic tube? Does it rub anywhere? How long do you anticipate before the cable cuts thr...

scuppers

I taped my inner gunnels together and ran both sets of scuppers at the same time on my drill press. Used a 1/2" forstner bit through the middle. A little touch up with a rat tail file and good to go.

When you say "entended deck" what do you mean? A full deck, like a kayak? Or like Glens deck? Kayakcraft has a nice chapter on installing full decks. Basicly you must have temporary supports for the strips (3/16-1/4) until you glass the deck. Then it is removed, flipped and you glass the i...
