Re: outside stem thickness
I don't see any problem with shaving down the outer stem to get 3/8". The inside stem is the main structural element. The outer stem is mainly to cover the ends of the planking and provide some bumper protection. Many canoes don't even have outer stems. I don't have any experience wrapping glas...

Re: Scuppered inwales question
I agree with Denis. Cut taper on boat side. This is especially important for the inwale because then you have a nice straight edge for attaching the deck. I think it is more important that the inwale/deck seam is tight, rather than the hull/inwale seam. I'm pretty sure CanoeCraft mentions this somew...

Re: Stems are done
Beautiful stems! It is a little hard to tell from the photo, and I may be missing something, but your last station mold looks too low. The top of the mold should be level to the top of the stem. It will be difficult to strip if it isn't.

I have found that Bolt Depot (www.boltdepot.com) is a good place to buy long stainless steel machine screws for hanging seats or thwarts. They have them up to 6" long and you can buy them individually. I have no commercial interest in the company.

Greg, I have ordered strips twice from Great Northern Craft in Vancouver, BC and had them shipped to Virginia with absolutely no problems. They are beautiful, consistent strips. Also ordered from Newfound Woodworks long ago, also with no damage. I wouldn't worry about damage in shipping and supplier...

Venture vs Endeavour?
I have searched the forum, but don't see this specific question. I have a client who wants a kayak for use in the quiet waters of Chesapeake Bay. He is 6' tall and weighs 180 lbs. He wants a boat that he can easily handle by himself. I showed him my Endeavour, but he thinks it is a little too heavy....

Hi Randy,
Beautiful boat and beautiful house! Could you email me your email address, I want to get more information on the stripper with ribs, if you are willing? I remember some of your earlier posts about how you did it.

Ron, I've built two redbirds, one cottage cruiser and two endeavor kayaks using particle board molds and the same strongback for all builds. I live in Virginia where it gets VERY humid in the summer and I work in a garage that is not temperature or humidity controlled. I have never had a problem wit...

Alan, If you can afford it, I would recommend you buy Ted's and Greg Rossell's book called Kayaks You Can Build. It has good directions for the keyhole cockpit and the spline joint tying together the two halves of the cockpit spacer. The purpose of the keyhole is to give you a bit more room, but als...

I have always used a single piece of cloth cut short of the hull length--about to where the stem starts to turn vertical. You want glass on the sides of the inner stem, but not on the top. I would sand the deck before cutting the openings. It is just easier to do it then, and you can mark the openin...

I just finished the deck on an Endeavour. I cut my own king plank and put a cove on each edge, thus planking cove to bead. I did this mainly because I think it is easier to trim the cove edge when fitting to the covering board, rather than trim the bead edge. Trimming the bead edge leaves a very fra...

After building in a 21x23' garage for years (shared with gardening and other household stuff), with the strongback at a diagonal, I am also building a boat shop. I started planning at 24x40', but costs forced me to reduce it to 26x28' with an upstairs storage area for molds etc., and a 10' covered s...

Stem bands on a kayak???
I am building my second Endeavor kayak. I didn't put stem bands on my first one as Kayakcraft doesn't call for them. All canoes seem to have stem bands, but kayaks do not. Why is that? I would be interested in people's opinions on the pros and cons of stem bands on a kayak.
Thanks,
Gene
