Does it look something like mine? http://i622.photobucket.com/albums/tt302/tszpieg/16ft%20Prospector%20Canoe/IMG_2313.jpg I found the epoxy part of the building process to be the most difficult BY FAR. I have had virtually no experience with epoxy and fiberglass, and much of the literature I read on...

For those interested... I thought I'd post results from my findings over the course of my varnishing. I went ahead and did one non-thinned coat of the 'woodfinish matte', over the 3 good coats of the 'gloss'. I really like the way it turned out after curing. I think it will be much easier on the eye...

Varnish schedule with matte final finish
Curious about how many coats of varnish those of you who have a matte finish on the interior use. I am using Epifanes and have applied a total of 3 moderate coats of gloss finish so far. Debating on one more coat and then going with a final coat of matte, or just going with the last coat of matte no...

Rod- Not too sure about orders or inquires, but they do produce nice paddles. A friend of mine has 2 of their Cherry beaver-tail paddles and they are beautiful in the hand; light and flexible. I used his paddles as a pattern for mine when I set out to carve my own 2 years ago. Good quality product f...

Interesting how you 'cap' the hull with how you install the outwale, Jim. I know another builder who did the same thing. It is a nice detail. I think I've settled on varnish alone for all trim. However, can anyone see a problem IF, over the years of use, I become dissatisfied with how the varnish on...

Frugal- Just curious what type of finish you apply to your natural cane seats, if any, and how has it held up? Alick- Depending on how your seat frames look, you could always just drill the necessary holes and weave the cane this winter, raother than using the sheet type cane. The weaving is really ...

Interesting problem hanging seats 16' Prospector
So, I'm out looking things over and notice an issue... Rear seat mounted 50" to front arm, back from center (Station 0), seat height from the keel line- 10". I figured I'd split the difference from what Canoecraft states on seat height of 9 1/2"-10 1/2" from bottom of hull. I mad...

Thanks Fellas! My outwales are glued the entire length, and screwed only at the decks. Inwales are glued and screwed (screws removed after epoxy set up). I think I might just run with varnish, instead of a combination of epoxy as a base and varnish on top of that. Outwale and inwale are Ash. I don't...

Gunwale condition over time
Quick question for those of you who have had your boats in the water for a while.... Have your gunnles held up fine with varnish alone, or would you recommend a single coat of epoxy over everything prior to varnishing? My gunnles are sanded and ready to go, but I'm wrestling if I should put off the ...

Space between seat arms and hull?
Title says it.. Curious as to how much space there should be between the seat arms and the hull. I would guess there should be some sort of space to allow for expansion, but how much?
I'm just about there! Two weeks and she sould be wet!
Getting very excited.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the help. I thought I might be okay with what I did. I guess I just needed a little affirmation from some experts. Purple Otter, the gunwales are all solid Ash. The one thing that still worries me is the material thickness after I drill and countersink the screw holes that will hold the s...

Gunwale material mix-up
I almost hate to admit this, but I mixed up the material for my gunnles... The inner gunnles are 7/8 wide and 9/16 tall, scuppered and tapered and installed. I went to cut the bevel on the outwales, and that's when I noticed! My outwales are 7/8 wide and 3/4 tall on the hull side with the bevel goin...
