Topic: Should I Add a Rib to a Nomad?

I have a Nomad. I used bead and cove strips, I used 2 layers of 6oz cloth on the bottom and one on the inside. I don't have thwarts, just the yoke. So far, I've solo'd with it and have also used it with another person in it. Together, we tip the scales at about 490 lbs. We've had about another 100 l...

I built the exact smae seats. I broke one on my second trip out. They were hung from the gunnels with 6 inch bolts. I weigh 220. Funny thing though, it didn't break straight across the cross member but along its length, splitting along the holes drilled for the caning. It was the front of the seat. ...

Hi Bill...did exactly the same thing on exactly the same boat a month ago. The bow seat fit just fine, but like you, the stearn seat was too high. I went to a hardware store and bought an "all thread" rod the diameter I wanted in a stick about 3 feet long. I cut it to fit the two rear seat...

Thanks FG, great idea. I'll file it away for future use. I ended up getting a length of all thread and made my own bolts and spacers. Got the seats in at the height I wanted. Thanks to all of you for the help.

Thanks Hoz, I have 8, 3/16th SS carriage bolts in 6 inch lengths. However, to get the 10 inch clearance that I think I'll need, I have to use 4 inch spacers in the front end of the stern seat and at least 6 inch at the rear. I'll have to figure out a way to get the nut to fit on the end of the bolt ...

Thanks Joe..I guess I'm "normal" as you say. 6'2". 225, shoe size 12. I'll use this canoe primarily on calm waters and slow moving rivers. Mostly hunting and fishing. I don't feel as though I'll do a lot of paddling from a kneeling position and certainly none in whitewater or rough wa...

A question of depth....(.I'm out of mine!)

I'm ready to hang the seats in the Nomad. I want to go as low as possible for stability, but not too low for comfort. Everything I've read here on the forum and in Canoecraft, says the average is 9 1/2 to 10 1/2 inches from the bottom of the canoe, up to the bottom of the seat frame....or...anywhere...

Scraped the runs off with no problem. The scotchbrite pad worked but did the same as the 120 grit paper...left white "dots". I must have been really stingy with the epoxy as it didn't go on thick at all. I used a squeege and tried not to leave any on the hull as Ted suggested. Guess I did ...

Can do. But, will the scotchbrite help to flatten out some of the runs also? edit..I wiped the spot dowm with a damp rag and the "spots" went away. When it dried, they were back, but with the accumulation of dust gone, it's evident that you are correct, they are high spots in the weave. Th...

Sanding question

The fiberglassing went a lot better than expected. I put the wet out coat on and the second coat according to Ted's instruction in the book. I had to go out of town for a day, so sanding is required before the final caot since its been about 36 hours since the second coat. I started to sand this mor...

Thanks guys..Kent, Canoebuilder, I did just that. Glued a strip on top of the depression yesterday and sanded it off flush today. It'll pass I reckon. Sanded the others til they were flush and fair. Got lucky nd didn't go thru any spots. I do have some places now that don't have a precoat, but I gue...

PD, I think you're right. I'll try and sand the fat ones a bit more and get the depression as minimal as possible. In the 3 places I'm concerned about, the difference is from about 1/16th to 1/8th. Wouldn't be too concerned except tht as mentioned before, these are strips that weren't cut or B/C'vd ...

OK..got her sanded and it all looks milky white now....guess thats the "tooth" I need for glassing. I'll begin (gulp!!!) glassing Saturday or Sunday morning. I do have two or three strips that as scrap, were not as thick as the one above or below it. How much of a problem is this gonna cau...

Bud..thanks for the repy and the encouragement! I'm inclined to go ahead and sand..have to anyway, its past the point of a chemical bond. Just hope those "dry, splotchy" areas don't show up under the glass for some reason. Wonder if humidity might have been a player. It's been raining here...
