micro shiny spots in my epoxy
Hi All - I need to put one more coat of epoxy on my hull. I have been sanding and sanding and I still have tiny little shiny spots, maybe 1/4 inch diameter, scattered across the hull. I can't honestly tell if I have scratched them up at all, they are certainly shinier than most of the hull. I am usi...

epoxy sanding advice
Hi everyone - I think it's going pretty well here - but the weird thing is that I never really feel like I know! I have been sanding drips and runs for what seems like way too long (120 grit on an r/o sander). I still have more than a few shiny spots and I can see a hint of fabric in a couple places...

glass all in one day?
Hi all - I think one of my problems is that I read too many books before I started to build. I did that once with several carrot cake recipes and it didn't go so well! Anyway - Susan Van Leuven seems to suggest that mutliple coats of epoxy should be added within a week of each other (she might have ...

Re: chasing cracks
Thanks for the advice -
Jeff I suspect you are about right, it doesn't seem to be getting better - that might be a pretty good definition of "done."

chasing cracks
Hi Everyone - I am in the sanding and filling stage. It seems like when I try to fill the cracks I can't help but get some schmutz on the hull, by the time I have sanded out the dark stains - more cracks have formed! I am a little afraid that if I chase these cracks forever I will sand a hole right ...

help with crack filling
Hi all - My first attempt at crack filling resulted in getting the thickened epoxy all over the hull - I tried to scrape it off with a putty knife before it set up, but it was still pretty rough when it dried. So I sanded - but when I got it pretty smooth it is still pretty dark. So my question is d...

Re: 15' 6" Cottage Cruiser
doe4rae that is BEAUTIFUL!!!!! Awesome job - your boat is absolutely as beautiful as others posted on this forum. I can't believe you had no previous woodworking experience! Truthfully, I am a tiny bit jealous. I started my boat before you started yours, and I am only now sanding and fairing the hul...

Re: fitting outside stems
Wow - Jim, That's really nice, thanks for sharing. I have made some mistakes in mine and the stems are gonna be a bit ugly. I hope that filling my gaffs with epoxy makes them less ugly - if it's too horrible I can always paint! I think it's one of those things where when you look at the boat it look...

Re: fitting outside stems
What is the purpose of tapering the outer stem?
Doesn't that make the mortise harder to chisel in?

fitting outside stems
Hi guys - it's going pretty well for a first timer so far I guess - but every time I get to a new stage I get pretty paranoid. I think the paranoia increases as the amount of work that would be lost if I completely screw up increases! I read three or four books before I started this project (cottage...

my deep coves
I think the beaded ends are cut to full depth, they are nicely rounded at the top with no flat spots. some of them do have "shoulders" because the strips were cut to imprecise thicknesses. I am working with poor tools and even poorer skills - Not sure what made me think that I could build ...
