Re: Glassing The Inside Hull

The second coat is a filler coat and depending on your epoxy can be done as soon as the first coat gets past the tackky stage. I have never sanded between them. Many builders do not even apply the second coat , opting for a rougher surface. Under normal conditions the second coat can usually be appl...

Re: Moving Canoe on strongback

I sold my farm when I had my first canoe 1/2 stripped. I had to move it to storage and then again into the garage at the new house. I didn;t do anything special to it, just put it across the back of a truck and later into a moving van . I just made sure things were level again when I started back on...

Re: Prospector Rocker???

The length at the waterline should be shown on a set of plans. My understanding of how rocker is measured is something differnt to different people.I would be cautious changing it from the plans. It has more rocker than the Ranger and I would not want any more than that. Bill Masons measurement is d...

Re: Weight : 1/4" white cedar vs 3/16" pine ?

Hi Randy, I am building a 14 ft Peterborough Zephyr. I bought plans from Steve Killing just over a year ago. Life got in the way so I did not get started until this winter. I have my forms cut and am ready to start ripping strips. Problem is that I am sharing my garage with my 17 year old son who is...

Re: Weight : 1/4" white cedar vs 3/16" pine ?

Glen seems to have put you on a good path,I would take him up on the offer of strips. I have been using white pine a lot . My present project is an old style Peterborough out-board that I am bulding with pine. Pine is a little heavier but cutting 3/16 will even it out with little difference in stren...

Re: Varnish recommendation

I have used Captains Z-spar and I really liked it but at the tripple cost of cheaper Behr that comes from Home Depot , I am a bit undecided. The Behr spar varnish works well with West epoxy. I have also seen good results from wood shield from home hardware. Cheap brands protect, as long as they have...

Re: Seat position for Endeavour 17

When I built the endeavour I did not have plans and was also puzzled by the seat placement. I used the layout from the plans I have for the venture. The book does not say this but centre appears to be at station 9. I layed the template out just forward of station 8 to just aft of station 10.This was...

Re: Lineage of Bear Mt. Ranger Lines explained by Ron Frenet

Great history lesson. Ron is a very heplpful guy , he helped me find some plans for a boat last year. All the people here that have built the ranger(myself 5) know just how great a canoe it is. Thanks for sharing.

Re: Cockpit Layout for Venture 14

The nice thing about buying plans is that all that info is there. On the venture plans the cockpit is located forward of station 7 to aft of station 9. The plans come with a cut out, if you don't have the plans you need to either buy a pre made rim that will come with a template or you need to desig...

Re: Epoxy not curing

West 207 should harden without problem at that temp. Did the leftover epoxy in the cup harden alright? It should be easy to figure out if you had bad epoxy, test a batch.Did you clean the surface with any type of solvent ? Or treat the wood with any stains? These are the things that came to mind whe...

Re: sanding & sheathing

when you wet the hull to raise the grain any spots of glue and filler stand out. This will be what you will see under the epoxy after it is covered. If the areas you are concerned about disappear when wetted , then you won't see them under the epoxy. 2 Gallons of epoxy is more than enough to do a Ra...

Re: ribs

There are some buildars like Langford that build the canvas style canoe and cover it with glass on the outside and no glass on the inside. The strips are wide as they would be for building a cavas canoe and likely not bead + cove. Wider strips would make sanding much easier since there would be a lo...

Re: ribs

There are few men that have the knowledge and skill to build that canoe , however there are ways of building with ribs that can be adopted to the epoxy method. Most canoe ribs are white cedar. Look at posts from Pattricks Dad here on the forum , he did a great job installing ribs after the hull was ...

Re: My hull is warped

Not sure what you are describing. Are both the hull and deck glassed on the outside and still together, or are they split , did you already split them and just tried to fit them back togethher . Is the hull sitting in a cradle. Its always a good idea to leave a few forms in if it is going to sit a w...

Re: Scarfing strips - all at once or in smaller batches?

Ditto what Glen said, full length strips for the sheer are nice , and butt joints are quick and easy after that. The reality is butt joints take only a minute or two to prepare unlike scarff joints that need to be cut on special jig , glued up , clamped and left to dry. It really is an individual ch...
