Hi, Si I have sanded down the keel line as much as I want to and have decided to finish sand at 120 and when I seal the canoe I'll keep an eye on that area of the canoe and fill with the epoxy/ mixed filler at the same time. I read Gil Gilpatrick does this in one of his books. I'm attaching a keel s...

Hi, I used an outdoor wood glue when I did some regluing last year but the original owner that did a lot of the stripping did not tell me what type of glue he used. I think what is happening is the canoe is swelling and contracting dependent on the outside humidy and this has cause some joints to le...

Thanks for the reply Rick. I don't think the hull is twisted or warped. I think the glue joints between the strips are letting go. I was thinking if I could sand some of the filler I put on doing the keel line I could try to squeeze some glue in where I can and tack it back down to the stations. I t...

Keel/ herringbone area trouble area on canoe
Hi, It's been 2 years on this canoe in an outside (under garage tent) enviroment and I think the moisture/ dry weather has taken it;'s toll. The glue between the strips is starting to let go and I tried to fill some of the area with wood filler before I start making the keel and the wood strips are ...

Hi, I bought my semi built woodstrip canoe last summer and put it in a portable garage as previously mentioned. I am still working on it but am very close to glassing now. The following is the pro's and con's of building in this structure. Pro's; It's better than building outside in the elements. I ...

:crying Too late Ed. When I bought the canoe the stem had alreadt been made with no outside to match. After the second attempt now, and it dosen't fit right, I give up. We're going stemless on the outside and that's final! :twisted evil Now on with the project....wish me luck....I have a feeling I a...

Yes , your right except I decided to make the stem a bit thicker than 3/4 too. The reason for this? I have to shave a sand this stem onto the bow since the original maker of the inside stem has made that stem different for whatever reasons. So I'm toying with this part but am making progress. The be...

Thanks Glen, That sounds like the best way to meet the stem to the keel. I read in one of my books that a butt joint should be used but I think the scarf joint would be better. I want to be able to remove a damaged keel if needed down the line and wasn;t going to glass over it anyway. Thanks for you...

Where the outside stem meets the keel
What joint should be used to attach these two pieces? A scarf joint would probably be the stongest but should the scarf be on the booton of the stem and on top of the keel of visa vera? i will be installing a brass stem band on the stem and keel. When laying up the glass and wetting out how would I ...

Just a few questions
Do you precoat the canoe with resin before you start galssing? How long before do you do this and do you sand before you put the glass down? 24 hrs? 12 hrs? My canoe is a square stern so my thought here when doing the transom is cut a piece of 4 oz cloth to put on the back and then cut the glass at ...

Hi Greg, Thanks for your timely reply. The gaps are very narrow and I really don't want to have to fill them with slivers of cedar if I don't ahve to. Can I not just use an epoxy with a filler to fill these hairlines in? Great pics on that site you directed me to. I enjoyed that! Have a great day! C...

Keel area herring bone popped during winter
:shocked Hi, I just re-tacked the keel area back down to the stations after gluing them again. The winter was not good for me. So now I have to take the tacks back out and the staples removed in the area of repair and there is certainly some gaps now. :thinking Can I fill in these gaps with a fillet...

Leather strips for caning seats?
Hi thought about using deer leather strips available thru our local Reserve. My thought is that when wet, leather sags and when it dries it shrinks. I don't know if using varnish or linseed oil over the leather would help or should I even be considering this approach? Thanks for you input. Cheers Ro...
