Thanks Doug- That was really helpful. This guy was using the same book that I was going to buy.
After reviewing the excellent site that this guy prepared I think I will not attempt making a kevlar canoe. Looks to be a mess and a lot of expense. Thanks for passing this on to me.

kevlar canoe
Has anybody ever build a kevlar canoe. I found a book on amazon about building a kevlar and was wondering if anyone had ever tried it. Is it more or less expensive thatn a cedar strip.

varnish question
I just completed the last coat of varnish on my Freedom 17 but I have a small area of about 6" by 2" where the varnish is smudged and slightly rough. I think this happened because I was near the bottom of the can and some solidified varnish contaminated my brush. Question is this: Can I re...

Freedom 17
I have varnished the inside of my Freedom and I turned it over and put on the first coat of varnish on the outside this morning. I am getting excited. The lines on this canoe look like a jet fighter or shark or something. Can't wait to finnish!

varnish question
I just put on 5 coats of varnish on my freedom 17. Looks pretty good. However, the deck on one end seems to have more dust in the finnish than I would have liked. Is there any way to sand this deck and re-varnish without having to varnish the other deck and gunnells as well. It seems that If I were ...

varnish question
I am having a lot of problems with varnish runs under the inwales where the scuppers are. By the time I see the runs the varnish is already too dry to wipe it off. I am thinking on my final coat that I will not try to varnish inside the scuppers because this seems to be generating most of my runs. D...

scotch brite sanding pad question
I have first coat of varnish on my canoe. Varnish can says to sand with 220 grit between coats. I have a maroon scotch brite pad that says is for metal. Does anyone know if this pad is about 220 grit and will it work to sand or should I just go buy some 220 paper? thanks

question for Glen
Glen- I am about ready to start varnishing. Can you tell me if you thin your varnish any for the first coat? Also, what do you use to apply the varnish, a regular brush or a foam brush? I will varnish the inside of my canoe first. Do you varnish your scuppered inwales at the same time that you varni...

I am having a hard time sanding the small space between my scupppered inwales and the strips.in preparation for varnishing. I have managed to sand some of it but some areas are difficult to reach, especially in the ends of the scuppers. Question is this. How critical is it to get this area sanded be...
