Consider making your stems 1.25" wide to avoid having a 3-dimensional cope it in to the hull. If you haven't seen Glen's photos on how cope in a stem on Bear Mountain Boat you wan to ask him. To do it over again, I would make my stems wider and just wrasp away the extra material.

I don't think it sounds that scary Raka Our best selling hardeners are the 610 which is very fast curing and the 606 which is slow curing. They are mixed at a ratio of two parts resin to one part hardener. The two to one ratio epoxies are probably the most popular because they give a good compromise...

To the best of my knowledge, marine epoxies don't contain solvents and thus during the curing process don't give off vapors, let alone hazardous gases or even airborne dust particles (fumes). Inhalation hazards are often associated with heavy metals such as chrome, lead, arsenic, etc but there are n...

I took my Redbird canoe camping two weekends ago (Cape Canaveral Seashore, Florida) . I loaded the wife and three little kids in it plus gear and it was fine. Even with five people (two who never stop moving) in the canoe I never had the feeling that we were going to tip. But the Redbird is not as s...

Why wouldn't you just go to an 8 oz or 10 oz cloth? I am not sure why one would need two layers of 6 oz cloth on a 1/4 hull but if strength is what you are after and the double installation is a concern, why not just up your weave? Either way you do it, that is a lot of epoxy that you are going to n...

I was in a restuarant a few months back and looked up and saw an old canvas canoe. A big one, maybe 18' long and 36" wide. It just killed me to see that canoe just hanging upside from the ceiling. I hope someone buys this guys canoe, restores it and uses it.

Have you tried McMaster Carr? http://www.mcmaster.com/

Just for kicks I searched left handed Acme nuts and they had them in 5/8" for two different TPI and I could them in either in brass, steel or zinc plated.

Its Me - you have confimed my fears that the 3/4" seats won't hold up. Thanks. I'll most likely build the new seat. How did you calculate that 1-1/4" stock would be needed? Bill. I just did a quick calc assuming a point load of 300 ponds on a simply supported 30" beam 1.25x.75. S = 1...

Well I think you need to add something. A quick calc skows that at 3/4" and 30" span your 300lb buddy will overload the seat if he puts all his weight on one cross bar. Let alone if he drops onto the seat. You would have been better off to make the rails from 1.25" stock rather than 3...

CSI Bear Mountain The Bondo could have been installed by some one other than the originator; someone, not as familiar with the process. The bondo could have been placed on by the original craftsman who did not yet have the epoxy. It looks like the whole processed stopped just before the glassing. Yo...

My stem molds were 3/4" and my stem pieces were 7/8". The over lap was some what of an advanatge in that I added clamps sideways to keep the edged perfectly aligned. I would think that a 1.5" mold might make it harder to keep the 7/8" laminents aligned.
