Re: Trying a new fiberglass weave

4 harness satin weave cloth is amazing stuff structurally. As you found in doing the outside of your canoe, it is more difficult to work with than plain weave. It is hard to get the cloth to lay flat on curved surfaces. With plain weave the weave "adjusts" to bends and curves easily, not s...

Re: Fiberglass Europe

While I am certain there are European manufacturers of glass cloth I see the WEST System has dealers throughout Europe including Sweden. Fiberglass cloth is part of their product line. They have 50 inch width 4 ounce and 60 inch width 6 ounce fabric. Sorry, I don't have the metric equivalents at han...

Re: Stem Springback off the form after Lamination

Not unusual. Clamp it in place and remove clamps as you need room for strips. The strips will hold it to shape.

Re: Steaming gunwales

I have built a few prosdpectors over the years and never had to steam gunwales. The sheer line is basically the same as the Ranger. The curve is rather gradual. Starting in the middle and clamping as you go out get it done. Canoes like the Redbird, with the high ends need steaming. Maybe if you had ...

Re: Willian English Model 20 offsets

Thank you Stephen!

It has more tumblehome than I remember. Maybe I'll get this one in the water soon. Thank you for your quick response and going the extra mile to answer my query.

Willian English Model 20 offsets

i am finishing up a hull I started a long time ago, so long that would be embarrassed to tell. The first Canoecraft book had the offsets for the William English Model 20. I no longer have the book or the molds and I need the offset for the center mold at the sheer/gunnel. I'm sure I can judge it pre...

Re: discoloring of wood after fiberglassing

If you used water on the inside after sanding, as you did on the outside, maybe it seeped through between strips and moistened the outside surface under the glass. nothing should touch the hull after sanding and before glassing I think painting the outside is a fine option. There are some pretty top...

Re: Rice Lake Skiff

In the Project Directories forum there is one builder, Juneaudave, who documented his Rice Lake Skiff build in 2004. Unfortunately the links to photos no longer work, but the discussion is still there. Maybe Juneaudave is still around to answer some of your questions.

Re: Redbird Stem Problem

If your measurements are accurate I think there is no problem. You'll only be taking of 1/8 inch on each side. I would go ahead and glue the outer stem centered on the hull and fair the strips in after.

Re: Ontario Whitehall

I have not much experience yet with building a centerboard trunk into a woodstrip hull, but I have a Catspaw Dinghy under construction and it will be a grand experiment. I have built a keelson into the hull so that there is a substantial frame member to mount the trunk to. It was set into the molds ...

Re: Seat reconfig questions

I have never used cleats, but I'll give an opinion anyway. Gluing is likely enough, but I would add mechanical fastening just to be sure. My go to thru-fasteners these days are copper nails(rivets) with roves. Screws would do as well I am sure. If you are unsure of the best place to mount your seat ...

Re: staining ash

Make sure you coat the side that is going against the hull before you install them. Gunnels will rot from the inside out if water enters the side against the hull. You don't even notice it until they break. I also dip the screws in watco oil or varnish when I screw them in. Any holes drilled for han...

Re: Widest strip that can be used

You can certainly use 1 1/8 strips for the sides of the hull, but they will cause problems around the bilge. The wider your strips are around the bilge the thinner they will be after you fair it out to a smooth curve. With 1 1/8 strips you might actually end up scraping and sanding through the strip...

Re: 3/4 stock for stations

The edge of the form that the strip contacts should be on the station line. The except for the center form, the forms should NOT be centered on the station line. Beveling form edges is totally unnecessary no matter what thickness stock you use.

I have always used 3/4 AC plywood.
