Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Wow.!!! Has it been that long..? How's it going out there in Canoe Land.? It's been a rough year to 14 months. Problems with too much rain. 2 months of harvesting hay, all hours of the day and night. Repairing old broken down equipment about every other day. 2/3 of our hay being stolen and trying t...

On that same note, my father once built a home-built aircraft called "Piel Emeroud" or something of that nature. French Canadian design, I believe. All Metrics... He used to figit and fuss with calculators and things trying to figure it out. Took a lot of Aspirin in those days..!! :laughi...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Well, it’s been raining and since my table saw is situated where the strips run outside the big door of the garage, I can’t do much ripping. They are predicting a couple more storms, one of which will drop us a cool 3 – 4” here in the valley. Possibly 9” – 12” of moisture, either rain or snow up in...

Re: Canoe Build in Arkansas

Kiwimay I have found, in two or three places over on the left coast, that while they don't stock the longer lengths, if you go in and talk to them and tell them what you are looking for, they can order special lengths. It's available somewhere and they usually don't stock it because it's not what f...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Hey Jim I was thinking about the heat, but, my one Propane tank heater won't keep it warm enough in the shed, as the sides are vinyl and it's an open doorway. I'm trying the heat gun, but that won't cover enough area to do any good. Maybe dampening it a little might help. ?? I use Titebond II for m...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Well, second time in a row.. pulled the straps off and the strips pulled away from the forms. I even put ‘hot-melt’ glue on the worst offenders. Popped right off... I have tried about everything to this point and it just isn’t happening. However, after sitting down and thinking about it for a while...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Thanks Brian. Haven't had much time to get out and look for that cord, but, I'll definitely use your formula on the next build. I can't seem to find the surgical tubing locally, but there are several places that have the shockcord, so that's how I'll go. Put on a couple more strips yesterday and th...

Re: Happy Holidays!

Best wishes to all from the Left Coast over here. Takin a break from making strips and switched into Cookie mode. Busy tonight assembling stuff for the Grand-kids and tomorrow will be with family. Tomorrow afternoon I may sneak out to the shed and try to get one or two strips in. Time will tell. Bu...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Hey Guys Well, I went out and found 4 ratchet straps from my motor cycle tools and used those on the worst offenders and they pulled them down very well. Well enough that I ran over to Harbor Freight and got some cam straps to finish up. They worked great.! The glue wasn’t dry when I got back 30 mi...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Weirdest thing guys... I posted a picture of putting straps on my hull, and one of how some of the strips broke loose, and when I got on just now this morning, that post is not there..? I don't see it on any other categories where I may have goofed.. Think I'm going back to bed and wake up again an...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Thanks Brian The straps I've seen at H.D. and Lowes. The shockcord I haven't seen, but, I'm sure they have it. Possibly at sporting goods stores as well, but expensive. I believe surgical tubing can be found at hobby stores since they use it for fuel line on models, and possibly some medical supply...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Ah yes... We use a few ratchet straps, but, of the 10K lbs load variety. We mostly use highway chains and binders, but, we use the straps for hauling hay on our pick-ups and trailers. I was picturing those on my canoe where the weight of the ratchet alone would probably crush a few strips. :) The o...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

I appologize for my ignorance, but, what is a Cam-Buckle strap. I guess I'm not explaining myself well.. my gapping problem is coming from the fact that my joints are too flat and in order to pull the next strip down to the form, it's opening a gap where the strips contact. The inner cove edge is, ...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Not a problem Jim. I wasn't sure the Paulownia would hold up under the bungie cord style and I'm sure that inner tubes would crush the strips. Both are stretched out and would be constantly pulling on the wood, possibly compressing it over time. That's why I chose the clamps. Once you put them in p...

Re: Non-Bear Mountain Designs

Jim The difference between staples and these dents is that the grain in the wood is severed by the staples. Even when they swell back up, the grain is still broken and gives you a darker endgrain color where the holes are. With dents, the grain is still in tact and if they can be brought out with s...
