I built this Ranger in June of 2003. It was my first Cedar strip boat and I really enjoyed the process. Here are some pic of the finished canoe. http://usera.imagecave.com/psimer/canoe23.JPG http://usera.imagecave.com/psimer/canoe24.JPG http://usera.imagecave.com/psimer/S2010005.JPG http://usera.ima...

Thanks Dave and Glen for the nice comments. I have been trolling around lake Lanier getting a feel for how it handles (caught a 5.3# LMB yesterday. :P ). It needs weight in the fwd seat to be stable enough to go full throttle with the 4hp Yamaha OB. My 42# thrust electric trolling motor is great for...

Launch of RLS and Pictures

I finally was able to launch the new boat. The unusually warm weather here in Georgia gave me a window of opportunity. Here are some pictures. http://usera.imagecave.com/psimer/Copyofchristmas2004013.jpg http://usera.imagecave.com/psimer/Copyofchristmas2004014.jpg http://usera.imagecave.com/psimer/C...

I finished a Rice Lake skiff in early November and the cost was $865 and 228 hours. I have kept an Excel spreadsheet of the whole thing and would attach it here if I knew how. Can anyone tell me how to do it?

Hi Dave, My two cents on the RLS. I wetted out the glass and let it cure for about 10 hours and then glued down the keel using overhead sticks for hold downs. I cleaned up the squeeze out of thickened epoxy with a squegee and a rag dampened with laquer thinner. I dont think I would do it this way ag...

Hi Bud,

I am in Gainesville. It's on Lake Sidney Lanier about 50 miles north of Atlanta. Where's Clayton? You are welcome almost anytime.

Get together

Thanks for the invitation Joan. I live in Georgia so, your boat shop is pretty far away. I would love to come but I will have to consult "She who must be obeyed" and see if there is a remote possibility. (Are rednecks allowed into Canada?) I put the 2nd coat of varnish on the outside today...

Bubbles

Thanks to all for your advice. I was sucessfull in eliminating the bubbles using cellophane tape and a new kitchen product called "Press'N Seal" by Glad. I tried saran wrap and that works too. The" Press'n seal" keeps the epoxy in place better. The tape works good too.

Bubbles

I have a few bubbles about the size of peas near the bilge area on one side. I havn't varnished yet and I think they will show and look bad. How is the best way to deal with these? I thought about carefully grinding them out with my Dremel and filling with expoy. would this make them invisible? Any ...

Reinbilt, The Rice Lake plans call for 2- thicknesses of 3/4" plywood for the transom. I had some 8/4" teak so I resawed it to 1.5" and glued up two pieces with thickened epoxy and a spline for the transom blank. It is a little heavier but I am saving weight in other places. With the ...

Rice lake skiff

Hi Dave, I am about to fniish the inside work and will be turning the boat over to finsh sand the outside and install the stem and keel band. I will take a picture then and post it. But basically I cut a scarf joint and shaped the transition from the stem to the keel mostly with my apron plane. I gl...

Rice lake Skiff

This is my second project. I built a Prospector Ranger last year and caught the bug. Here are a few pictures of the building phase. I am now in the trim and finishing stage. I will post more pictures later. http://usera.imagecave.com/psimer/ http://usera.imagecave.com/psimer/Picture001.jpg http://us...

I use a 12" disc sander which I made by attaching it to my 14" Delta band saw's pulley.
It works great and is usefull for many other projects such as scarfing etc.[/img]

Rice Lake Skiff

I am thinking about building this skiff from the plans available here. I want it to be as light as possible and be able to handle my 4 hp yamaha OB. Does anyone on the forum have any experience with this boat ? What pitfalls await if any? I built a Ranger last year but my wife says it's not stable e...
