Re: Floatation Compartment

After several wilderness trips with my canoes I am considering adding flotation chambers. I've never capsized, but not having them makes me feel a bit uneasy. My kayaks have foam in the ends, but as you said that seems to add noticeable weight. Two questions: 1. Is there an easy way to make the temp...

how should I attach the seats?

I am building my 3rd boat and can't decide how to attach the seats. My first boat(Ranger) I hung them from the gunnels, my second was a kayak so.... I'm thinking of using cleats on this boat but I'm worried about them popping off under weight. I thought about using the glue on studs like I did for t...

Painting the outside hull

Is it necessary to use Marine bottom paint or are there lower cost alternatives that other builders have used? Also, I was thinking I could apply the paint on top of two coats of epoxy as t...

I built a resolute 2 years ago with no rudder. I paddled it loaded on a one week trip in Quetico and never felt the need for a rudder. I have paddled it many times unloaded and also felt that it tracked just fine. I'm glad I didn't add one but then again I've never paddled with one so I have nothing...

Very low budget kayak

I’ve started building a very low budget kayak. I’ve got about $240 invested so far which includes enough glass and epoxy and all the wood. I expect to spend a bit more for seat and bulkhead material and misc. hardware. Most of the wood for the hull came from 130 year old heart pine planks that I sal...
