On myBob's special I used stainless steel that wraps from stem to stem over the keel.The stainless doesn't tarnish like the brass and is much harder.I bedded is in silicone so I'm not worried about the wood.It's not traditional but I think it looks good.I can drag it up on a dock and not worry about...

Terry,I think you will be ok.My inwales are3/4 thick ,but after I counterbored for wooden plugs only about 1/2 " was left under the bolt head.No problems yet.What kind of wood are you using?I agree with you on tapering the outwales ,then they won't look too chunky.

Hi Brian, try using an1/8 wider strip for your last one.If you only need 1/32 that should be plenty.

Very interesting.Thanks for the feedback guys.I decided to bite the bullet and make my own hardware out of 1/8 inch stainless.I made a prototype out of luan that seemed to work so I went for it.I will try to post some pictures of the progress.

Thanks Glen,the bungee system looks like a good option but I really want to try to hinge it.I have tried a few different types of cabinet hinges but none have been quite right.I have a few more to try before I try to make my own.Have you heard of any other options?Thanks ,I will keep you posted with...

hatch hardware?

Hey guys,I am building a Bear Mountain Resolute for my wife.I am working on the hatch right now and I want to do it with no exposed hardware,kind of like a car trunk.Any help on ideas or hardware sources would be appreciated.I have a feeling I will be fabricating everything. :thinking thanks

Thanks guys for the input.I just finished the second coat of epoxy and i think it will be enough.The first coat almost burried the cloth so tis coat covered great
.I faired and sanded by hand so I shouldn't have to sand the epoxy much because it's pretty flat.Thanks again!

epoxy and 4 oz glass

I just glassed the deck of my resolute this morning .I used 4 oz cloth ,and it looks like 2 coats of epoxy will bury it.Is 2 enough or would you guys recomend 3.Any help would be great.I will try to post some pictures. :thinking

I found long lumber!!!A local mill has Brazilian walnut 1"x1 3/4"x20' for $10. Just enough fora set of outwales.It is a beautiful match to the black walnut i used for the deck ,seats and inwales. :big grin

thanks Tim.maybe i will give the scarf one more try.are spring clamps or tape enough to clamp without starving the joint?how about a biscuit in the joint? Thanks again for the advice!

laminating gunwales?

has anybody laminated gunwales on a curved form instead of using a scarf joint?it seems to me that you could use 1/4" strips ,like the stem,and stagger the joints.I had 3 scarf joints snap ,i didn't think i starved the joint but now i am gunshy to try again. thanks for any advice! :thinking
