I added an extra strip to raise the gunnels of my Redbird and paddle in a sitting position. I found that hanging the seats about 8.5" from the bottom of the canoe gave me a comfortable and stable position to paddle from.

I finished my Redbird this year and used it for the first time in early August. I was totally pleased with the way it handled. It was so sweet to paddle (me in the back ((220 lbs)) and my daughter and my labrador retriever in the front ((200 lbs))) and fast. With packs it would be just about perfect...

Thanks Jeff. I think that I need to talk to my broker again to see why they need an appraisal. Maybe the person that I talked to didn't really understand what I wanted. Basically, a rider was all that I wanted.

Thanks again,
Tom

My insurance company requires an appraisal. Maybe I should change companies. I realize the cost of insurance is minimal, I'm just having trouble finding someone to do the appraisal in my part of Ontario and I'm not sure of the cost of doing that. I think that I'll look at different insurance compani...

appraisals and insurance

Ever since I heard about that fellows kayak being stolen (and having completed my first canoe) I've wondered about getting some extra insurance (I hate the thought). Along with that is the need to get an appraisal done. I don't know if anyone else has gone to the trouble and expense and I'm not sure...

No worries, you're not stealing my deck design. I've seen other boats with the same built-in handle. Woodsong Canoes (check out their website) do it that way as well as others. It does look nice though.

Hey, Ramps. I'm not familiar with Paulownia but at 2/3 the density of WRC, sounds good. I really like the grain and figure in sheoak, but fairly expensive over here. I too love the smell of the cedar ...it's a shame we have to cover it up with epoxy. Also too bad cedar dust is so bad to breath in. I...

Thanks very much for your comments Ramps. What are you using for your strips? Western Red Cedar is still obtainable in clear 20' lengths over here but it is expensive. It's much more cost effective to use shorter lengths and butt them together. Don't forget to post some pictures of your 'bird!! Than...

Thanks mt. I was also very impressed with yours when I first saw it. That rope feature is amazing. I would've liked to make this years rendezvous (it's only 3 hours away) but other things got in the way. I will try for next year.

Tom

Sure Geordie. I've used a brush and put a thin layer just over the affected area and then very carefully sanded the area after the epoxy cured, feathering it in. A roller would be OK too.

Thanks Geordie. Wow, you're launching in October and I'm putting away. Best of luck with your 'bird. I'll be watching for it.

Rob, I'm sure the quality is there. You're just being modest. Keep me informed.

Thanks Rob, for your compliments then and now. I can't believe how fast you guys are at building a boat. I guess after building a few you get better and quicker at it. Let me know when you're finished so I can drop by and see it.

Tom

Thanks very much. It was a labour of love. Rick, you're obviously well acquainted with my favourite park. I hope to do much paddling there soon. It was actually quite funny. Everyone was saying they were not going to be the first to put a scratch in it, they were going to leave that to me. Well, my ...

One more Redbird

Well, another Redbird hits the water.....finally. About 2 years (no winters) to the month. What a sweet canoe. I can't believe how well it paddles and how happy I am with it. Thank you so much everyone that has helped me in the past. I couldn't have done it without you! All strips one piece WRC, wal...
