I have also had great results with US Composites, although I have little experience to compare it to. I have used it on both my kayak and my canoe. Snowman ditto, ditto, ditto and ditto - I used US Composites on the only two boats I 've built, a Ranger canoe and Resolute kayak. I been on one week c...

I'm interested in this canoe also. Can you embed some photos here or host them on a public site?

kayak solo trip in Quetico

This is a link to a video I made in Quetico Provincal Park, using the Resolute I just finished in June. It paddled great, but I need to work on my ultralight camping skills to make the packing and unpacking at portages a bit more efficient. http://s221.photobucket.com/albums/dd169/jimmar57/?action=v...

I took her out yesterday. :big grin I've never paddled a kayak before so at first it seemed a little squirrely. After a few minutes I was comfortable. It seems like the wind wants to push the stern around some, but I figure it I put some weight in the rear hatch, that problem will diminish. It track...

My Resolute

This Resolute is my 2nd boat, the first was a 15ft Ranger. The majority of the hull is from scrap wood. Much of it is ~130 yr. old White Pine that I salvaged from the ceiling of the front porch on my 130 yr. old farm house. Some of it is "white wood" firring strip. All strips on the hull w...

installing a purchased hatch

I've started stripping a Resolute. My first kayak, second boat.

If I were to purchase a hatch and cover like this one:

can it be glued in with epoxy or is there some other preferred installation method?

Last weekend. I bent the stems for the resolute I'm starting. My "steam box" is just a length of 3" PVC plugged at one end with a wooden "donut" and a rag stuffed in the other end. Steam comes from a coffee pot with a copper pipe stuffed in the top fired by a small camp stov...

You've got me a little worried. I've only buit one canoe which has scarfed outwales also, Cherry....I'm not even close to being an expert, but....couldn't you just re-glue, clamp and screw the joints together and then plug, without removing the whole outwhale?

UV protection for graphite bottom

I have an epoxy/graphite/silica powder bottom on the canoe I just finished. All I did to it was sand it to a satin appearance, it was not varnished. I've read that UV can damage epoxy, that is primarily what the varnish is for. Should I apply some sort of protection to the graphite bottom? :thinking

my first canoe

Attached are photos of the Ranger 15 I just completed. It is the first boat I’ve ever built, in fact I’ve never even attempted a project like this before. Even though I’ve never posted here seeking help or advice, I’ve spent countless hours reading other posts. Thanks, this has been a valuable resou...
