Glen, My friend just built a 16' "non" Bear Mountain canoe. I built a 16' Huron Cruiser before this. We have learned from each other in building of each of our canoes, each giving the other a hand with the glassing et al. We used almost all of the East System Kit (2 gal. of Resin and 2 qts...

Looks like a good start Tim!

You will n ot be disappointed in the "stapless" construction - little more work - but IMHO the pay-off is excellent.

Just a quick question...maybe a dumb one at that ....What is a "rolling bevel"? :thinking

Big Woody - Having "a couple" of knots that stand out may not be quite as appealing as having "many sporatic" knots throughout. Also agree with the "workability" issue... extremely noticable when carving a paddle! Must work from every which direction to follow the grain...

Big Woody In retrospect I wish I had not used any strips with knots in them. I thought they would add a nice bit of character, but they now just seem to make my canoe look like it was made from cheap lumber.(which it was) IMHO - beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I like the look of having the kno...

I'd dito that!

I just wanted to build a canoe - cause Ted said that I could...even with my "limited" skills.... but that is "artwork"!

Nice Job! :applause

Thanks Tim. Your kind words are much appreciated. I have visited your page in the past. Nice job also! I have a couple of canoe trips planned for this summer, and likely another build late summer / early fall. The herringbone was MUCH easier than I had expected. Nobody should be hesitant to give it ...

Hi Dennis, Figured I'd chime in here too. I used the herringbone method to close in the football. Wouldn't do it any other way. Much stronger (although not an issue once glassed, but it holds things together until that time) - added appeal (looks better - in my humble opinion). If you build with the...

Hi John, I did have the same problem as you have stated. I tries several methods to resolve it, but wasn't successful. I ended up turning up the speed on my router and reversing the direction of the cut. (routed the strips with a "climbing cut). After doing this, I would suggest the following: ...

I did scupper my inwales. I concur with Glen, good place to tie off gear. I also agree with Rick, they do not have as much "glue surface" to the hull. I doweled and used brass screws on almost every-other scupper to compensate for this. One more "pro" is that it makes it easier t...

Very Nice Danny! Great Job.

What canoe are you thinking for your son?

I didn't see what kind of wood you used (both hull and accent)?

Nice to hear that you have enjoyed our Ontario nature! Algonquin is a nice part of our province.

Thanks Danny. After ripping the strips and when I was sorting, I visually inspected and checked the intergity of each piece. I wanted the knots as a "visual" aspect of the canoe, however was aware that these could be weak points. So the knots that didn't "pass" my inspection were...

Back from our maiden voyage. Canoe functioned as expected. I was a bit concerned about the initial stability, but it was very reasonable to paddle and we didn't find it too tippy. My wife did express some concern about there not being too much room for her in the bow, but other than that, a very enj...

Thanks Jim (and All). I glassed the inside and then installed the inner gunnels...same as the outside - glassed first - then gunnels. Although my pics don't show too much detail.. I still have a few runs in the varnish - will sand final next spring - getting too cold for varnishing. The gunnels are ...
