If you're able to set up the strongback on solid ground (ex. concrete) so it will stay true for you, and it's well protected from the weather (moisture and sun) and you KNOW that you'll have it finished before there is any chance of extreme cold or snow, and you are prepared to wait for ideal condit...

Cool, thank you for the help guys. Trying to get all the wood and other supplies together now so I can finish my canoe without too much more expense after Christmas...this quarter's bonus will be good, but next quarter isn't looking as promising... Got the wood for the gunwales and seats (even got e...

Okay, but really it's just a matter of maintenance, not material? He made it sound as if there was absolutly no way around it...which I figured was wrong. So, as long as the maple is properly sealed, it is no more likely to stain than any other wood, right? So, a couple coats of thinned epoxy, with ...

Wood for gunwales?
Hey, I'm still a ways off from this point, but starting to collect the wood...Most people seem to use ash for gunwales, but all the lumberyards near me want an arm and a leg for ash, so I picked up some maple to use instead. Now, after buying the maple, I came across a place that sells ash specifica...

Similar to the plaque mentioned above, a custom branding iron may be an idea. Useful for other projects too http://www.leevalley.com/wood/page.aspx ... at=1,41115

Yeah, I'll be swapping over the two outer pieces when I glue them up. With the walnut soaking for 7 days, I figure I'll wait until next weekend before glueing, just to be sure they are nice and dry. I'm nervous about springback when I take them off the stem molds though to finish drying...how long s...

Dave, I've got basically the same set up as described in Canoecraft, but using a campstove and kettle, rather than an electric kettle...my wife didn't like the idea of me stealing the kitchen kettle...and the walnut has been soaking for about a week in a bathtub of water - it seemed very dry when I ...

Help! Two potential catastrophies!
So, I've been working on my first canoe the past few weekends, and got to the point of bending the stems today...and I think I may have screwed them up. The canoe is a Ranger with the plans lofted from Canoecraft, and the inner stems are cedar, outer are Walnut...on to the pictures, oh, and I apolog...

Okay...A couple questions. And one slightly frustrated fist shake! Rick, thanks for putting the idea of two canoes in my head! Now I'm wondering if two smaller canoes (Ranger, Bob's Special, Prospector, etc) would be a better option, and offer more flexiblity. I'll explain: I know I like canoeing, I...
