Good day, Thank you all for your excellent responses. I am surprised that Helmsman Spar varnish faired so poorly in that comparison. I am not going to use shellac. The reason for considering shellac is that we are going fishing on the Restigouche river on July 3. and the rest of the canoe except for...

30' canoe

Good Day smyk, I'd be happy to post the pics if only I knew how to! I read some instructions from the web site admin., but they were too complicated! I don't know what a url file even is. Sorry, perhaps some one could write on here exactly , step by step how to do so. I received a kind reply from Ji...

laying glass on 30' canoe

GoodDay, We are finally ready to lay the 6 oz glass and epoxy on our 30' lg canoe as soon as the re-ordered shipment of glassing materials arrive from Noahs. I once asked if anyone has layed the 1st layer of glass cloth from side to side? Well ,we are considering this . We would start at the stern, ...

Good Day again, Thanks for the vote of confidence re F'glassing! The lost order is certainly not the fault of Noah's, in fact their shipper Dexter has been very helpful in trying to track down the order. It appears to have failed when the Ontario trucking company tried to interface with a maritime c...

Good Day, Thank you all for your much valued advice and spectacular photos!! I discussed this with my freind helping me build this 30' canoe, and we both agreed to use the cut center line method . Being that we are both "seasoned", (old) woodworkers this worked like a charm ending with ver...

Herringbone or straight??

Good day All.. I've noticed lately that most are not using the herringbone method of laying the center strips in favour of cutting a line down the centerline and butting the two sides together. Why is this??? Is there any problem in using the herringbone method? I will be at the center of the bottom...

Good day, Thank you for your responses. You've made great points that confirmed my suspicions! I recall building two strippers back in 87 and we did indeed use the herringbone pattern on the center bottom. This seems to have almost disapeared in the current methods. Do more builders use the herringb...

Plywood Bottom???

Good day All. We are progressing slowly on my 30' river canoe. We have finished placing the stations and are now cutting the 1-1/4" thk Ash stern. Dave, the fellow working with me discussed the possible use of solid core 8mm plywood for the bottom of a "stripper", which in our case is...

Thank-you for your advice.. It seems to me that by laying cloth from side to side would not only make the job easier by dealing with 7 - 8' lenghts of cloth at a time, but would also, as you say, add some strength to the boat.

sideways????

Good day .. I hope I'm not boring you with issues about my 30' canoe, but I really need your advise! Have you ever applied the cloth from gunnel to gunnel with overlaps, then applying a nother layer in the normal fashion from bow to stern? Any problem with this that you may anticipate? Thank you, De...

Inside Sanding..

Hi again. I've read some older threads where folks have discussed shaping and sanding the inside especially at the bilge area. Has anyone tried a 3 " drum sander with lets say 120 grit drums chucked into a right angle drill??

Regards, Dennis

wood choices???

Good day all, Well we've finished Bead and Coving the strips of Eastern White cedar for my 20' fishing canoe and I am quite disappointed in the wastage as well as the quantitiy of short strips. I have an awful lot of good strips, 8' and under down to 4' in lenght. I also have a smaller quantitiy of ...
