Re: WRC sources, Indianapolis area?

I got my boards in Columbus at Brands lumber. Large selection but this time of year they usually don't sell much so they don't get new shipments. Wherever you look try deck boards instead of 1 x's, less knots.

Re: Varnishing Questions

Thanks Randy,
Did you thin with mineral spirits? I know Epiphanes sells a brush thinner but I'm trying to save a little money and I've already got some mineral spirits.

Varnishing Questions

Getting ready to varnish my Ranger, finally. Got a couple of questions to throw at everyone. I'm using Epiphanes gloss varnish and it probably won't be t-shirt weather in the garage, more like sweatshirt weather. Do I need to thin it, maybe 10% for the first coat and not thin the other coats? If so ...

Re: Wooden Landing net?

I would stay away from red oak, it doesn't steam, bend or glue up well. Has a tendency to crack. I would think cedar would work just fine.

See the last post on tips and techniques, whatever route you choose build a jig and make some test pieces. I used method A on my cherry strips just because it it didn'nt look as noticable. I have to look twice to see them now. I think alot depends on the grain orientation of your strips and go light...

No kneeling for me, bad knees. Most of my paddling done on moving water, more steering than paddling. Usually sit with my legs straight out using a seat back and not loaded down, daytrip type stuff. Just wondering on others experiences with low seats.

Thoughts on seat depth

After searching this forum and others I just wondered what people thought on how low to hang seats. I know standard is 9-10 inches above the bottom but I've seen some like them lower. I know it would add stability but? Every canoe I've been in has been a production type which is about 9-10 inches. S...

P.S. used Titebond II on my Ranger and didn't have any problems. Bonded well and didn't contrast any with WRC I used. Tried some III but it showed up as a dark line between lines.

Be advised Titebond III dries to a dark brown color while Titebond II is more a yellowish color. Depending upon your wood you might want to consider that.

Hi Gary, You'll have fun, the woodworking part is fun, the epoxy part is a little tricky. I've built a 15 Prospector Ranger but have yet to get it wet. Just need to hang the seats, finish the gunwales. I lofted my plans from Ted's book and that is half the fun. Alot of fun and as Ted says in his boo...

The yoke had been epoxied before but it was sanded down . There was some color left in the wood from the first coat but I believe most of the first coat had been removed. The yoke is cherry. My concern is using this epoxy on my decks and gunwales which are installed but haven't been coated with anyt...

It didn't really turn cloudy, just gooey and wet, still hasn't set up, yet it wasn't like that til I took it back into the cold weather. Very strange. The hardener was a yellowish color when new and has been stored in the house. Haven't had any previous problems with this epoxy. I used the same kit ...

epoxy problem

Does epoxy go bad with age? Recently made a paddle and a portage yoke and covered both with US Composites 635 thin. I glassed one side of the paddle blade for strength and coated the entire yoke. Problem is the yoke got gooey and won't set up. Did both at the same time, in the garage (heated tempora...

Where exactly are you located? If you can't find it over the counter I would think you could find it on the Web.

Thanks David, I'd been reading that thread and that's what got me thinking about building my own. I don't do much portaging except over sandbars around here. I've used a couple of different seatbacks, most of them broke eventually. I do alot of canoe fishing and after a couple hours of floating, not...
