Great work FCPO. What a beautiful canoe. Be careful when you're trolling yourself as bait amongst the gators.

I wouldn't cut the boat. I'd either wait for the dehumidifier to shrink it back onto the forms or just glass it how it is, if you can't wait.

Nice boat Sherm! I like the herringbone and center design. I did the same thing.

I'd love to see some pictures of your installation Tom. I am considering how to mount my seats, and think hanging them seems odd, complex, and possibly flimsy. I'd also like to try to mount them without any metal fasteners, to maintain my canoes "stealth capability". :wink I might also lik...

Here are some pictures of my double herringbone again: http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l103/ME-262/CopyofIMG_2502.jpg I cut the strips in two in the middle to make things go together easier. http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l103/ME-262/CopyofIMG_2500.jpg This photo shows the transition from match...

As somebody who owns a 5' X 10' precision CNC router with dust collector and vacuum table that is now sitting idle, I imagine that I can't be the only one in these tough economic times. If the Bear Mountain folks would like some lapstrake boat kits or form kits made, I'd be happy to bid on the job.

Thanks to Glen and all the others who make this site possible. It has been quite helpful and a joy to participate in. It would seem that no matter what problem I run into, somebody on here has run into it before and has a good solution.

The Sonex sounds like a great plane. I don't think they had a lowered seat option when I first looked at getting plans. If you can build an airplane, a wooden canoe should be easier, cheaper, and more forgiving of variations in technique. And once you're done with the canoe, you'll have the skills a...

In this photo the six slightly thinner red strips with the really wide grain are the redwood strips. http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l103/ME-262/CopyofIMG_2596.jpg At the very top of the photo, after you click to enlarge it, you will notice two redwood strips glued together and see the dark line w...

Elmer's ProBond Interior/Exterior wood glue. often hard to find, and not to be confused with ordinary Elmer's ProBond wood glue which is a different glue entirely. The Interior/Exterior glue is ANSI Type II water resistant once cured. In spite of their claim about easy clean up with water, don't try...

Patrick's Dad is right. You have to shave the outer stem off until it is fair with the hull form. Mine was square at first too. http://i94.photobucket.com/albums/l103/ME-262/CopyofIMG_2775.jpg Then I planed it and block sanded it smooth with the rest of the surface, and then rounded the edge. http:/...

I had a very good experience with the redwood I used so far. It was really soft and cut like hot butter. The only drawbacks were it was really soft, and it turned really dark where it contacted the glue I used. So the wood itself created a dark glue line wherever I glued it.

The glue you use can be a factor in how visible the joint is. As is how tight the fit, and how close the match. Try to avoid having a joint that light can shine through, when the sun hits it the joint will glow from the other side.

I figure that the amount I saved ripping and routing my own strips paid for my table saw and router table. Not to mention that the tools were a tax deductible business expense, so I bought a planer too. The tools are now mine to keep and have already paid for themselves on their first job. Plus I us...
