When I was lofting my Ranger I discovered problems with the values, in Canoecraft, for the stems. After contacting them they sent a revised set of offsets. I have posted this on the last picture of www.tinyurl.com/new-ranger-canoe.

Re: Scarfing strips - all at once or in smaller batches?
I had the same problem - the longest strips of white cedar were 9 foot. I scarfed individually so that I could stagger the joints. I you scarf all the strips together the joints are going to line up. See www.tinyurl.com/jb-scanoe.

scarfing strips
I built a Bob's Special last year and used the long diagonal splice since the boards I had were only 8 to 9 feet. As mentioned, the color matching is important, and frustrating. I wasn't sure the vertical scarf would be strong enough when it came to some of the extreme bends. One advantage I have is...

Great job! It looks like you have to work in rather confined space also. How did you continue the dark strips onto the stem - it looks really nice. Thanks also for the tip on a canoe cover - I recently received my "bag", from the Bag Lady, for my Bob's Special. She really does a nice job. ...

glassing seats
My seat frames are made of chestnut and when I tested them, before installation, they bent quite a bit so I routed a slot in the underside of the front rails and epoxied a 3/8" steel rod in each. They flex very little now.

I recently built a 15 foot Bob's Special and used a little over one gallon of resin.

Thanks Asa. This was my first build and quite an experience. I can't say enough about the help this forum provided - we are lucky to have it. I only put one strip on at a time because of the use of the wood welder and had to repeatedly open the clamps to place another strip, thus the idea of the scr...

Maiden voyage of the Bob's Special
Quite a nice feeling, after all the hours spent, to "paddle your own canoe". Thanks so much for all the great help and ideas I picked up on this forum.

A really nice looking boat. You must be very proud. I think I know how you must feel - I launched my Bob Special the same day. Out of curiousity did you keep track of the hours?

Thanks guys! Karl - actually I didn't alternate the strips intentionally that's just the way the white cedar came - sometimes the color is dark on one end and light on the other. Trying to sort it out by color would have driven me crazy.

The Bob's Special
I'm almost done with the Bob Special. A few coats of varnish on the exterior and that should do it. I have picked up some real valuable ideas and resources from this forum and I do appreciate it. Thanks you very much.

I was looking for S.S. seat bolts and found that 3/16 was the problem - 1/4 was readily available and that's what I used.

Thanks Rick. I did epoxy the inwales in place. I'll take your advice and seal the outer with epoxy and just screw them on.
