Re: Sycamore with Blackwalnut canoe....
Put the first sealer coat on, with a 3.25oz section of cloth on the football area. The Sycamore isn't "looking quiet" as I expected but I'm going to "stay the course". It "darkened" up more than I expected. http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b197/sparkysherm/Sycamore10.j...

Re: Sycamore with Blackwalnut canoe....
Continuing progress..... Getting close to ordering Glass and Epoxy... http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b197/sparkysherm/Sycamore8.jpg The two dowel sticks extend to the ceiling, they're holding down two small areas that "pushed" up...I'm guessing during high humidity weather the last few ...

Sycamore with Blackwalnut canoe....
Earlier I asked about building with Sycamore..... Sycamore is a pleasure to work with so far. Mills excellent, bends well and doesn't "split". So far I'm satisfied with it, only time will tell on how heavy it will make the canoe. It seams to be "fairly" light so far. http://i19.p...

Re: Has anyone "stripped" a canoe with Sycamore?
what I found on the Internet so far is that it's 33lbs per cu.ft. for comparison: Western Red Cedar 21 lbs. Eastern Red Cedar 30 lbs. Red Oak 41 lbs. I've built one from Eastern Red Cedar, a 15ft Hiawatha that ended up at 68 lbs. (not bad I guess) (strips cut at 1/4 inch) I will definitely try cutti...

Has anyone "stripped" a canoe with Sycamore?
I'm planning starting another Canoe, I've had a large Sycamore tree sawned and is nearing dry. I did a search here and didn't find any thing, except it does absorb its fair share of epoxy. I've got alot of Walnut that was giving to me from "Tornado-ruins" that should look good as trim ( gu...

Re: Miscalculated
Looking good though...I know its recommended to cut them
all at once for consitency, but I don't think it's that big of deal to "sweat it".

Re: 16' Router Table
Thanks for posting this, I've though of making a bigger
router table for this, but the strongback idea is great....
The strongback is so large it needs to serve for "double-duty" any-hoo....

Re: Strongback complete
I fastened mine to the floor until I finished the outer "glassing".
Then I added coasters to move it outside for sanding on Nice weather days.
Didn't experience any problems.
