Re: 16' 0" Prospector

First of all, thanks for all the kind words, I am really happy to be a part of this community, this forum is a great source of information and inspiration for me! -Seats: I decided for mounting the seats to the hull brackets instead of hanging them after quite a lot of thinking. The benefit of it is,...

Prospector finally finished

Hello friends! Many thanks to all that contribute to this forum, it would have been much harder without this resource! After too many hours (according to my wife :laughing ) in the workshop, my first canoe is finished, just in time as the spring is here, so I should be able to launch it this week! h...

Re: Nomad 17'

I agree with Randy 100%, I would let the first strip run naturqlly and just fill with shorter strips as there is a lot of recurve on the model you chose. But it can be done with a single strip, depending on it's width, thicknes and the species of wood.

Re: Getting strips

Don't worry, use shorter strips, I live in Europe also and it was hard to find long boards, and also the 4m just fit into the workshop with the door closed :laughing . I used scarf joints, and I have a hard time finding the places where the strips are glued together, so don't worry, and go ahead wit...

Re: 16' 0" Prospector

I made the seats, and started to install the inwales, and I also added the bulkeads. I decided to fix the seats to the hull rather then hang them from the inwales. Since the canoe will be used strictly on flat water and sloooooow rivers I suspect that the loss of flexibility should not be a problem....

After some thinking and trying to scrape off the high spots of epoxy where the fabric overlaps, with the scraper, I gave up, as I was making very slow progres. It was time to switch to power tools :twisted evil . I put a sanding disc with 60 grit on my grinder and started to sand the epoxy. I had to...

Really great idea, thanks for sharing! I was thinking to make counter moulds, to avoid all the clamping ( Iused the method for stapless described in Ted's book), and make a faster job, but I think I will try this on the next build! Was the down pressure from the rubber bands adequate to press the st...

Thanks Glen, maybe one day I will get as good as you! The thing that bothers me is where the fabric (fiberglass) overlaps, I can still see that even after 3 coats. The problem is that the other guy who was helping me glass it (a professional boatbuilder), was not really carefull when cutting the fab...

What I used on a friends motorboat is very fine calcium sand (used for production of medical pills), and mix it in the paint, and it works great!

I think that cork would be just fine, or you can also use some kind of density foam (like armaflex or airex, or something simmilar) They don't absorb water, but they might look out of place in a wooden canoe. Anyway, I would use them without attaching permanently, I would just put them in the boat a...

I am also nearing the glassing phase, and the best I could find in Europe is 1m-1,2m width of the cloth, and I also plan to overlap it in the football area, for extra abrasion resistance. I have also sen people overlap the fabric parapendicular to the keel line, and supposedlz thaqt reinforces the b...
