Re: Low angle block plane or Spokeshave
Also, don't discount the $4 properly sharpened scraper for scraping out the inside. Profile it to a curve, sharpen it with a file, 220, and 400 grit sand paper, then fold over the point of the blade toward the handle with the back side of a chisel. It works like a cabinet scraper on steroids! Trust...

Cockpit Layout for Venture 14
I am in the end stages of my first build, a Venture 14. I did the lofting by entering the information from Kayak Craft into AutoCAD and printing full-size mold prints. (I'm a little tied to numbers and hesitant to wing it on this project.) Now I'm to the point where I have to cut a hole for the cock...

Fit of outer stem on Venture 15
After two partial prototypes to develop good working practices, I'm in the final phases of stripping the real thing. For the outer stems, I'm using steam-bent, laminated pieces of mahogany (which, I might add, is a real pain to bend!). For the stern stem, I used 1/8" strips and got a very nice,...

Gluing the stems
How awful would it be to use a type II glue instead of epoxy to glue the stems? I'm a couple months away from glassing the hull and am a bit gunshy about buying a big pile of epoxy right now.

Yeah, I can see that station 1 is going to be tricky getting in exactly. I'll probably clamp it loosely and fair it into place. That station 2 offset, though... I think I'll just stretch the whole spline down from the foremost point and match station 1. There's not a lot in the water at that point, ...

Glen, Understood about the buried forms. I may have to resign myself to release my grip on hard numbers and just use some good old trial and error. I'll hold out until the weekend in hopes of a more definitive answer. All I'm using AutoCAD for is to create the 2-D drawings. I don't have the wherewit...

Thanks, Willo, for the encouragement. I'm not sure how to ignore station 1. Sooner or later, I'll have to make those two lines cross. If I move station 1 up, then the sheer line and deck line get tweaked. If I move the stem down, then the bow point moves down. I thought about stretching it, keeping ...

Venture 14 Bow Stem Question
I am building my first wood strip kayak, a Venture 14. I am using the offset tables in Ted Moores's book. All is well until I get to where the bow stem meets stations 1 and 2. Station 2 has the profile at 12.25" and the bow stem meets station 2 at 12". When I draw the spline for the bow st...
