shim material

Using strips of cardboard (the back of writing tablets) as shims It was easy to level and adjust the mould plates with minimum effort to the wire I strung between the Stem Moulds (see Ted Moores Canoecraft). playing cards make great shims for this purpose: * thin for fine increments * uniform thick...

using old wood

Oh, my .... the reasons you don't want to do that are too numerous to list on this forum. What you need to do is immediately ship those beams to me in MN where I will properly dispose of them. :wink Actually, reusing the wood is a great idea provided the interior is in good enough shape to yield dec...

small plans

You can successfully make small size adjustments in most designs but most any good design scaled down to 50% size will produce a failed canoe.

Better to use a design that was meant to be the size you want.

http://www.carryingplacecanoeworks.on.c ... _list.html has a couple small designs.

bolts for thwarts

Ya need to realize that a large part of Cliff's canoeing is in places where early bailout is difficult and the cost/effort to get there makes it very undesirable to cut a trip short .... makes multilpe layers of protection attractive.

Freedom 17 Seat position

The results of your calculation reveal the basic truth that you can't trim a canoe using seat position alone unless your paddlers are of not too different size. For your situation (mine too), you'd either have to jam the bow paddler into the stems or move the stern padler way up into the fat part of...

damaged canoe

I've gone the strip-the-epoxy route and concur that you'd save little if any work relative to starting over unless it's a highly decorated hull requiring a lot of piece work (the kind that Chip S builds) In my case, the canoe and I had 30 years of shared history and the fact that I *REALLY* wanted t...

Another way to build canoes ... Haabjas

I'm hoping the forum will tolerate this not quite off-topic posting ..... We're planning a trip to our daughter-in-law's homeland, Estonia. Perhaps since the two sides of my own family tree come from relatively waterlogged places (northern MN and southern Louisiana) one place caught my eye, Soomaa N...

stretching a design

Here is what this web site's FAQ says about that topic. Q. Can I modify an existing Bear Mountain design.....can I make changes to your plans? What will the result be? A. We suggest you proceed with caution here. It is hard to predict the performance of a design once it has been changed without taki...

multiple use strongback

I have an adjustable length strongback that various folks have used to make canoes from 15.5 ft to 18 ft long. ... probably could be used to make a 20 footer. Made it using a 13 ft long 3 inch square steel tube with wooden inserts slid into each end and secured by screws thru the steel (4x4 ripped d...

mortise and tenons for seats

I've made tenons with a crosscut jig on a table saw with the blade peeking up just a quarter inch.

Mortices using a drill press and a quarter inch forstner bit to hog out most of the wood, finish with a chisel

Sliding bow seats are of limited use in trimming a canoe with different sized paddlers. By "limited" I don't mean without value, just not huge value. They can compensate for weight differences and/or shift you from stern heavy to bow heavy and back only if the weight difference is relative...

sliding seat in a symetrical canoe

A rationale I've heard/read is "You might choose to solo paddle a sym canoe by sitting in the bow seat facing the stern and the slider makes that difficult" ..... but that you'd never want to so that in an asym canoe.

Not sure I buy into that .... but you get to decide that for yourself.
