Rewebbing a canoe seat

I've almost completed the process of refinishing my 20yr old swift kippawa tripping canoe. The gunwales looked as grey as old asphalt. I used to re oil the woodwork yearly but the canoe has been neglected the past ten years or so. I figured it was time to do something before it passed the point of n...

Re: Installing seats with cleats.

Micmacjay. I built a rice lake skiff and installed the seats using cleats. I'll try and dig up some pics of the install. Keep in mind that I used solid plank for the seats and not a lightweight frame so I was more concerned with overall strength than aesthetics with the install. I bedded the cleats ...

Re: Strip Cutting Friction and Wax

I had good luck using thin kerf blades designed for skillsaws... 7 1/4" blade. I think I had a freud.. ripping bade. Used paste wax on all surfaces really helped. And don't forget some good feather boards.

Re: Titebond 3

I used titebond 3 for my rice lake skiff due to working in cooler temps and it worked perfectly. I used a squeeze bottle to ensure a small bead and wiped up any runs with a damp cloth. I would deffinately use it again. That and I couldn't find any other titebond in my local area.

Re: Cyanoacrylate Glue

I switched to CA glue for scarfing my strips. It worked so well, especially around defects, knots that you have a hard time finding the joints. And it was quick.

Re: Where to splice strips and sheer clamp

To speed up the building process I used cryanoacrylate (Krazy glue, super glue, hot stuff) to glue my scarfs. I used an accelerator to set the glue. I havent had an issue and my joints are virtually invisible unless the wood colour changes significantly. it was real handy if I ran into grain issues o...

You could use any soft wood. I've even seen some walnut used.
Of course you might want to consider the weight of the woods used.

Re: Stretched Rice Lake Skiff?

You can just make out the seat in this pic. all set for a bit of fishing .I can't remember how far forward I placed it. I'll see if I can find a better pic of the interior.

Re: Stretched Rice Lake Skiff?

moonman I run a 6hp and have no trouble with concern to shipping water over the transom. However if I'm reversing into waves/wakes.. that's another story. I went with a bench seat moved inboard to facilitate easier control with an outboard. I'll see if I can find a pic. (boat is in storage..won't be...

Re: Stretched Rice Lake Skiff?

I have built a skiff . I did not stretch it but have thought that if I ever built another one I would make the transom wider. Maybe build with the forms from the center(widest form) all the way to the transom the same. That way it would make a more stable more of a flatter bottomed boat . Kind of li...

Re: Rice lake Skiff launched

I've finally moved up to a 6hp. The boat moves nicely when I'm out alone. You can deffinatly tell it's not a planing hull when you're carrying passengers. On the other hand it paddles easily.. I found that out the hard way. Here it is from last september up on rousseau. It's held up nicely except fo...
