Re: Twisted Stems

Jim,
Any luck getting the twist out? If not you can always use 1/8" strips to laminate up a stem right on the canoe without steam. No worries.

Re: Taper from scupper blocks to decks

The final turned out pretty well. I did end up with an unanticipated scarf joint - remember the old adage about measuring twice and cutting once? I cut the gunwale a foot short - right on my mark where to stop routing a roundover cut. Fortunately I had about six inches extra length I could use in a ...

NW Passage Solo

My wife and I christened my Passage Solo today March 19th - I started cutting strips the day after Christmas. Final weight is 40 lbs on the dot with 3/8" outwales and 1/4" ash inwales offset with 1/4" cherry scupper blocks. Seats and thwarts are ash. I only paddled a few minutes until...

Re: Anyone use Last n Last Varnish from Raka ?

I thought this thread had died! I also posted to the kayak building forum with no responses. I applied the 4th coat of this varnish to the outside of my canoe last night. Admittedly I have no other experience with this or any other varnish, but it went on easily with no problems using foam brushes. ...

I agree with Jim and Glen. A circular saw with a thin carbide 24 tooth blade - I bought the Freud Diablo based on others around here- with an aluminum rip guide works well. Very uniform strips and little waste. If you can find wide stock - 1x10, 1x12 - it goes really fast. I used clamps to hold the ...

So I made up a couple rough mock-ups tonight with scrap and cardboard for decks. I definitely did not like the open wedge shaped gap where the scuppers end. I think I'll pass with the cherry wedge too. I liked the look of continuing both layers of the inwale to the tip. I thought it might be too thi...

I took a look at that design. Very cool. It will be one sweet boat.

Thanks Randy. Still scratching my chin but now considering just continuing the 1/4" cherry solid to the tip stopping the scuppers as you did. With only 1/2" of total inwale thickness and 3/8 outwale thickness, I'm thinking it won't be too bulky. As I cut the blocks I think I'll tape or hot...

Taper from scupper blocks to decks

Another question moving further along in construction. I plan to make scuppered inwales for my Passage Solo similar to John Michne's instructions. I've ripped ash to 1/4x 3/4 which will be scarfed and have cherry in 1/4" x 3/4" for the scupper blocks. I plan to use 1/4" thick cherry f...

NW Passage Solo

I'm in the middle of building NW Canoe's Passage Solo. This is my first stripper after building a Folboat about 30 years ago, a stitch and glue duck boat about ten years ago and a fiberglass covered foam duckboat a couple years back. I just took the canoe off the forms tonight and will start working...

Anyone use Last n Last Varnish from Raka ?

Has anyone used the Last n Last Marine and Spar Varnish sold by Raka ? Larry says it works well over their epoxy. Has anyone tried it? It cost about $17 per quart. I received this from Absolute Coatings, the manufacturer today: Our Marine and Door Spar Varnish can be applied over epoxy but the surfa...

Thanks everybody for your encouragement. I precoated last night with good results and today applied two layers of 4 oz glass in two layups - one layer for the entire outside and a second 30" layer on the bottom. It is looking really good. The RAKA epoxy is working great as I've made a plastic t...
