Re: Making laminated gunwales

Jim
What kind of wood did you use in your layup? Any chance of seeing a picture of the laminated gunnel on the canoe?
Thanks

Making laminated gunwales

I have read where some builders have made laminated gunwales using a mix of soft and hard wood strips (maybe 3/16"). This seems like a solution to the problem of finding long clear hardwood stock or scarfing shorter pieces. I assume the process is similar to that used when laminating wood for i...

Re: Scaling building plans for the Ranger 15 ?

Tonight I went through my building journal looking at numbers on my last canoe. The plans for this canoe (Damselfly) came from a wood/canvas builder who copied the lines of Bell Wildfire (except portions near the shear). I adapted the plans to build with strips. I was "weight conscious" wh...

Re: Scaling building plans for the Ranger 15 ?

Brian and Jim Thanks for all of your tips and suggestions. I think I have plenty of ideas to work with. I am sure I will have more as I start into this project. I hauled my strong back into the shop. It is going to be tight, but I think I will have enough elbow room. My big focus right now is to get...

Re: Scaling building plans for the Ranger 15 ?

Brian Jim Dodd (on the BWCA.com builder's group) has already led me to your post on the canoetripping web page. I like your engineering approach. If I can find NWC I will use that and try my hand at 3/16 strips with 4 oz glass. I am not sure what "s" glass is. Do you remember where you pur...

Re: Scaling building plans for the Ranger 15 ?

OK Jim. Thanks for the encouragement. I have a feeling that the scaled down Ranger will make a sweet little canoe and one that I can handle alone. My shoulders do not work so good anymore.

My biggest hurdle right now is to find room in my small shop where I also store 2 of my strippers.

Scaling building plans for the Ranger 15 ?

I finished my Ranger 15 a few years back. Following the Ranger, I built a 13' canoe and finished that in 2018. I want to get another canoe going and here is what I have been thinking. I would like another small canoe but with the lines of the Ranger 15. This small Ranger canoe would be used as a &qu...

Re: Alignment of book matched strips: Closing the bottom

Brian Ok, will try to get more pictures of my canoe project and maybe start a thread under non-Bear Mountain projects. Stripping plan 2.jpg This is my 3rd and it has given me some challenges. It is a 13 foot solo called the Damselfly. The canoe was designed by Alex Comb for wood-canvas construction....

Re: Alignment of book matched strips: Closing the bottom

Brian
Thank you
Good practical and easy solution. Now, why did I not think of doing just that ?
Cheers

Alignment of book matched strips: Closing the bottom

I have book-matched my strips for each side of the hull. One thing I strive for is to have the points on the port and starboard strips meet as one point along the center line. I have cut my center line and those strips are fixed in place. I know what to do if my lay-up strip is slightly higher than ...

Re: How to remove dried tree pitch from hull ?

I'll answer my own question. I found on another canoe site that folks have used WD-40 without harm to the finish. I think I will try it on a small spot.

Re: Scaling down canoe plans ?

Jim Thank you. Thank you. It is great to have a person with first hand experience, share that experience. After I made my post, I thought about reducing my plans on a copy machine and adjusting my form spacing appropriately (as you say). Knowing that you have had success is encouragement to forge ah...

Scaling down canoe plans ?

Lets say, I want to build another canoe and that I have a perfect model of what I want that canoe to be (if only in my head). I have a 15' Prospector Ranger and I do love the way that canoe handles both tandem and solo...... that is my model of perfection. But, what I would like is a smaller solo &q...

How to remove dried tree pitch from hull ?

What do I use to remove sun dried pitch from my hull without damaging the finish. I have tried mineral spirits and 2 kinds of "Goo Gone"......... nothing worked.
