Re: Lofted the Wee Lassie II
update! I have been using my french curve shaped cabinet scraper and have had great success. The aspen is a little harder than cedar and the scraper works better on the aspen than I found it to work on the ceder. I have one side almost faired ready for sanding and the other side about 60%. Has anyon...

Re: Lofted the Wee Lassie II
No i have not. I did go over the hull with my paint scraper to get all of the glue off first and did notice a little tear-out when I bore down on it but will try a cabinet scraper. This is by far my least favorite tool for this work so maybe that is why I didn't think about it. Thanks Glen, I will g...

Re: Lofted the Wee Lassie II
Hah, first of October. More like the middle of December but life has a way of doing that! Finished stripping about 1 week ago and had to run an accent strip down the middle cut in after I was complete because I cut my last 3-4 strips to short and pulled the keel line down to force the gap to disappe...

Re: just wondering
I had the thought of building two at a time starting one about 1-2 weeks after the first to maximize your working time when you are doing stapless construction. I think you could churn out, Like brian said, amybe two every 4-6 weeks.
Just a thought.
Just a thought.

Re: Pulling hull back down to molds halfway through strippin
Thanks, Glen. That is exactly whaat I was looking for. It is a "challenge" to get the aspen to do what I woant it to do using the stapleless method. DO you htink wood glue is strong enough?

Pulling hull back down to molds halfway through stripping
I am about half way through stripping my wee lassie II with aspen strips. This wood has proven to be very stiff and does not like to twist except with very careful and patient placement of my u blocks and wedges to hold them down. I am able to do one strip at a time only but I am ok with it since I ...

Re: Tiger Maple
I happened to see a Wee Lassie II(same one I am building right now) whe we were camping. It was reclaimed redwood decking for the strips with the accent being two pieces of curly maple( which looked a lot like that ) with a darker strip between. It was very nice. The builder said that he experienced...

Re: Shaping the outer stem
I left mine square edged even though I wasn't using a stem band. I prefer the corner on these with a slight round over with my sander.

Re: Lofted the Wee Lassie II
Finally got my aspen strips machined yesterday. All in all it took me 1:45 to do 54 16' strips bead and cove. I am getting better and faster! They did fuzz a bit in places but not bad. More stripping this week! Life has been hectic so time has bee at a premium. I hope to get it stripped by the first...

Re: Lofted the Wee Lassie II
I have been noodling over my problems now for a while and I have finally figured it out. Since I used the vlaues in mac's book for stations 1, 2 and 3for the keel it has thrown everything out in that area. Not bad it is just making my middle station just not right. WHat I figured out is that station...

Re: Shaping the inner stems
Unless you build the same boat over and over again I think it would be very difficult to hit the rolling bevel required as you near the keel. I don't know if this is true for kayaks but it is true for the canoes I build. I vote for shape as you go. I do get it pretty close to begin with and then tou...

Re: Lofted the Wee Lassie II
I did. I was able to glue some cedar strips on the #1 station mold and re-fair the curve to my liking. It was a little difficult with the strip in place but soem handy work with the plane, spoke shave and chisel and I got it looking good. I ran several full strips at different, representational loca...
