Re: Transporting Kayak
A word of caution: I've carried my canoes everywhere on my roof without issue. I did just have a terrible experience carrying a plastic kayak on Yakima racks. These are the racks that hold the kayak in a near vertical condition. I had recently returned from a vacation that included carrying the kaya...

Re: Epoxy sanding
I now realize that I sanded too much in an effort to remove the little "low spots" that show through. I like the idea of doing a final finish coat of epoxy. Is there a risk to just rolling on a coat in just the areas where then pattern of the weave is showing through or is it just better t...

Epoxy sanding
I'm in the process of sanding the outside of the hull. It had cured for over a month. While in the first step of using 180 grit, in some spots I started seeing the pattern of the mesh. I know for sure that it is not the actual mesh. Canoecraft gets a little vague about this. I'm starting to use the ...

Re: Strips not aligned at stem
Thanks guys. Hadn't thought about lowering the 'high' strip. That makes more sense than raising the 'low' strip.

Strips not aligned at stem
I'm a little over half way up the stem with the planking and I noticed on the bow, my strips are not meeting cleanly. Tough to measure, but I'd say at least an 1/8" or more. Should I start cheating the next couple of strips to work towards getting them to meet? I'm thinking that if I raise the ...

Re: Clear coat prep
Perfect, thanks. Last question: I'm scheduled to get the clear coat sprayed on the 31st. If I put on two coats of epoxy between tonight and tomorrow night, is that enough cure time to sand on the 30th?

Clear coat prep
I've got a body shop lined up to clear coat my canoe. Canoecraft advises to seal bare wood such as gunnels and the thwart prior to varnish. Now that I'm no longer varnishing, do you think a seal coat is necessary? And if so, I would imagine it might be necessary to check compatibility between the se...

Sloping gunnels
Due to the tumblehome on the Bob's Sp., the thwart does not mate nicely to the underside of the inwale. Is the proper technique to drill perpendicular to the inwale and penetrate the thwart at an angle? If so, I'm concerned about having enough room for the nut and washer under the thwart and still h...

Fiberglass frustration
Just when I thought I was getting good at the whole fiberglass thing....I'm on my second canoe. The outside of the hull went pretty good. Although I think I'm still taking off too much epoxy while squeegeeing the first coat. Anyways, now the inside. It's been hot out here on the West Coast so I wait...

Particle board molds
I just received some molds from Bear Mountain Boats. All my other molds I made from MDF or plywood. I'm concerned about the longevity of the particle board. Although I'm not in a high humidity area, I feel as though I should apply some sort of sealer as protection.
Any thoughts?

Re: Varnishing
I found a guy that does clear coat applications so I am really leaning that direction for my current project. My biggest concern though is that I'm building a canoe for a friend and worried about how he can do his own touch-ups. If I use varnish, I would just give him a can of varnish. Are there spr...

Re: 16'-6" Hipawa
I want to get creative with the king strip. Not sure how wide I can make it and still follow the ridge on the molds. The deck will be my first stab at going stapleless. I'm also studying the joint between the coverboards and the king strip to see if I can do something unusual. Still planning ahead o...

Re: 16'-6" Hipawa
Thanks for the clarification. Hadn't heard those terms before. Using that language, the Kipawa seems to have very little stem recurve and doesn't appeal to me. Guess I'll pass on the offer. Thanks all. By the way, I'm in the middle of building the Resolute kayak. Getting ready to start the deck next...

Re: 16'-6" Hipawa
Sorry, yes, it is the Kipawa. Sounds like this is a popular model. Visually, I prefer the models with more curve to the bow and stern lines. I guess this is the rocker? Anyways for the offered price of $150 for molds, it may be a decent investment.
