Has any builder constructed an Ontario Whitehall ? I should like to communicate if so. Best wishes, Patrick.

Ontario Whitehall

Hello to strip builders, I am interested to contact anyone who has built an Ontario Whitehall. I am currently building one and plan to make it as a sail boat. The exact placement of the mast and size and position of the trunk is a slightly open question. The plans I have only have a basic drawing of...

Re: Ash bottoms for tough river?

I've just read the post Ash Bottoms for Tough River. In my experience canoing on a river full of rocks, logs, sharp stones etc, a layer of epoxy and graphite mix will protect the bottom of your canoe. This is a very tough protective surface which takes a real hammering. Even after scraping over rocks...

Re: How many strips to build a canoe?

Hi John, I've just viewed your post on the Builders Forum. Having lost your email address due to change of computer and change of address etc., have been out of touch. Much water has gone beneath the bridge but I would like to make contact again. I don't know if it's by the rules, but my address is ...

Installing the thwart.

Hi to those experienced builders. I have a query regarding the installation of the thwart across the centre of the canoe. I built a number of prospector canoes several years ago and currently am working on a Ranger. Fitting the thwart is something that I find most tricky as there are several angles ...

Re: Strip Gaps and Glue Signs

Hi Patrick, a comment from the other side of the world ! I've just read your post and looked at the pictures. Your work looks excellent to me. As has been rightly commented by others, we tend to view our own work with a super critical eye. No one else will notice any imperfections you see. Ron Frene...

Re: Fairing the inner hull.

Brian, Thanks for your comments re the pullshave. When I saw a picture of it on line the radius of the blade seemed to compare to the shape of the curve of the ProPrep scraper I have been using so thought possessing a tool that had a re sharpenable blade would suit me fine. The ProPrep scraper worke...

Re: Fairing the inner hull.

To Jim and Brian, thanks for your replies and suggestions. To add to my original enquiry I've just done a bit more research myself and found something which may be of interest. From the Lee Valley catalogue there is an item which looks interesting, a Veritas Pullshave which has a shallow concave bla...

Fairing the inner hull.

A general question of any of the builders, what is the most useful tool for shaping the inner hull ? I have a ProPrep scraper that has a stainless steel blade that used to work very well. However, it doesn't seem possible to re sharpen it to the same level as the original factory edge. I believe it ...

Re: Western Red Cedar

With smaller strips potentially there will be less material to remove when you are fairing the hull so that's got to be a good thing. I have an author who advises this anyway so go to it. Patrick.

Re: Table of Offsets Chestnut Prospector

You guys are lucky that inches and their fractions are still standard in North America. Quite a few years ago I wrestled with these unfamiliar measurements. In New Zealand where I live metrics have been standard for a long time. My sons couldn't believe why I would struggle with an old ruler to work...

Re: Western Red Cedar

Thanks Jim. I buy from a company that imports logs direct from North America. They tell me the quality of their sawn stock is pretty even except perhaps for the sap wood which can be brittle. I haven't come across any timber with knots so perhaps I am lucky. Patrick.
