Re: Recent Build

a prior builder might have this info but I sent an email directly to BMB to ask your question. They may reply back here on the forum directly. If they reply to me via email, I'll repost the reply here.

Re: Second layer of Glass?

Greg's advice for adding the 2nd layer on the outside of the football is sound. It will add abrasion resistance and stiffness. If you want to protect against impacts on the outside, you should consider adding a layer on the inside. If you think of the structure as an I-beam (two plates - layers of g...

Re: Second layer of Glass?

If you are on lakes without a bunch of hidden rocks and you behave yourself, you should be fine with one layer of 6 oz glass. But Lakes vs Rivers isn't really the parameter you should consider. If the shores of either are rocky and you aren't paying attention, you can hit a rock in either environmen...

Re: New Solo Canoe - Freedom 15'3" and 16'2"

I softened that sharp corner by sanding a small corner off creating a surface for a 3/8" wide strip. I started with that strip and went both ways from there. That allowed me to have a fairly nice rounded corner instead of a sharp corner. I wasn't so much worried about glassing it but being a ta...

Re: When to cut the stems to length

I assume you are talking about cutting the stems to length on the far end (not the end near the first station mold). I leave the stems extended until I have taken the hull off the mold and glassed the inside and just after I install gunwales. I use the final placement of the gunwales as a guide for ...

Re: Freedom 17 vs Nomad 17, which is easiest to build for an absolute novice?

I've built multiple Freedom design. I have not built a Nomad. But looking at the design of Nomad, I see that it has more curve of the sheerline and thus will require a bit more work to build. I love the Freedom 17. It's a wonderful craft and easy to build. As for a single tool to ask for, that's a h...

Spammers

I've made some changes to the forum. We have had a massive number knuckleheads creating accounts and posting useless spam on our forum over the past several months. Accounts were previously auto-approved if users pass an antispam filter. It wasn't working. So now, each new account request will be ev...

Re: Ranger, Huron Cruiser, or Bob's Special?

Ive built the freedom 15. I've also built the Freedom solo. it's an awesome craft. I've also built several Freedom 17's. If you can find a way to make the 17' work, I would recommend the Freedom 17 over the 15.

Re: 16' Prospector Modifications?

I would not shorten it. I'd either scarf a few planks or find longer material.
The first build I did, I shortened it by 6" by making the station spacing a bit shorter to accommodate my smaller work space... It wasn't the end of the world but I've always wished I had built the full length boat.

Re: Graphite additive for epoxy

I only add graphite to epoxy when I want to strengthen a joint and am gluing carbon fiber components. I wouldn't put it over the top of a nice wood/glass surface.
