re: floatation I built a cedarstrip floatation / wanigan that fits in the bow (or stern). I've only used it once as a wanigan and only a couple of times as floatation when playing in rapids (base camping for a weekend). In the latter role the design functioned quite well. But I wouldn't use it tripp...

There is no need to varnish over the area that has been coated with graphite. The black surface of graphite prevents any penetration of UV light. Varnish will also negate the lubricating properties of graphite. Rocks tend to bite into varnish. With graphite the hull will slide over the rocks with le...

If the mortise and tenon are not a perfect fit, use thickened epoxy (sanding dust is fine). This will fill any gaps.

Depends on what you mean by "strong". It is my understanding that colodial silica makes a "harder" finish for, as they say, abrasion resistance. They are like little glass beads. That is why I mixed it in with my graphite/epoxy for the bottom of my canoe. But for a "strong&q...

I use straight epoxy, no filler. Suspend the paddle in a little mold full of epoxy, then scrape and sand to shape after it has hardened. I wonder if using filler would prevent chipping of the epoxy tip. As I've mentioned elsewhere, a paddle tip isn't really the right application for graphite, which ...

I used sanding dust thickened epoxy for filleting. Thats how all my trim is glued on and it has been fine. That is also what I use for laminating paddles. I've also used fine sawdust for epoxying broken chairs, etc. Even used it as a filler for a small repair on my car!

There are people out there who have done what you are talking about with the Redbird. Unfortunately, their comments were lost when this forum was reconfigured. Be patient and keep bumping this message to the top for the next little while in the hope they may still be monitoring these forums. I did s...

New builder and design forum on CCR

By popular demand there is a new Building and Design forum on the CanadianCanoeRoutes website. It is not just for cedarstripper construction. It is meant for any/all contruction methods and materials and design discussions, paddles, wanigans, etc. But there are invariably discussions about cedarstri...

The Dacron boats are light. But be sure you are not comparing apples to oranges. Geodisic Aerolites' home page mentioned above boasts an 8 lb canoe. But it has only a 150 lb capacity. Looking at their other designs I can see that even their larger solos have insufficient capacity for my body weight ...

Don't give up on the two identical canoes idea. You may find a significant performance difference between whichever two different canoe designs. This may cause some problems. One canoe may be faster and always having to wait. The other canoe slower and always having to work harder to keep up. The ki...

The Huron is a quick boat, especially with two people paddling. It is relatively narrow with sharp entry lines. You can get a sense of that from some of the finished pics on my site mentioned in a previous post. It does feel a bit wobbly at first but I've been happy with the secondary stability and ...
