Jason, A scaper plane blade is very similar to a paint scraper blade in that they both have a bevel (instead of a 90 degree burred edge). They are sharpened the same way. The "trick" that I think most are missing, is the burr that is formed on the edge as a last step (John mentions this). ...

What a beautiful eulogy. I can feel the love and hardship your family shared. I grieve at your side.

Thanks Randy and MT

I'd love to sneak in a voyage, but it's already gone. I did stipulate that if her ever puts it in the water, I get a ride too. It was such a labor of love, I hated to see it go, but he REALLY wanted it bad. Can't wait to start on the next one.

Wee Lassie

Finally (almost) finished the Wee Lassie. Still have to cane the seat and finish the paddle. Sold it this weekend. I'll never get to try it out. The guy is going to hang it on the wall. :crying Oh well, now I have to build another! :laughing :eyebrows Bud http://home.alltel.net/carroll2/Canoepage_fi...

Kent, I have plastic cane in both my canoes, and have not had a problem with stretching in three years. Seems to be holding up well.

Obviously your wife wasn't taking the pictures, or there would have been some of you falling on your a**. :laughing Then again, you probably "forgot" to upload those.
Looks really good. Did you make those paddles?

lkiffner,
Brush some varnish on a board and see if it cures. If so, you will at least know there is something on/in the epoxy that is causing the problem.

Sounds like you're using a fairly fast curing epoxy. The bubbles either came from tiny air pockets in the wood, or were trapped in the weave of the glass while wetting out. Sitting the resin and hardener in warm water before dispensing will make it thinner for the wetout, and help allow the bubbles ...

Doug, can you be more specific about temp.(of air and boat), time of day, viscosity of resin etc. anything you can think of would help.

WOW!! Congratulations Randy and Patrick! You've got a great looking canoe. The only thing wrong with it is that upside down maple leaf. :laughing Can't wait to see pics of launching day. Have a ball.

I'm afraid you're just going to have to junk the anchor and build another with thinner strips, lighter cloth, and lightweight trim/seats. :laughing I'm so envious. :wink
Take care,

How much weight are you expecting to lose by removing some of the varnish? I don't know exactly how much half a gallon of varnish weighs, but I would guess around 6-7 pounds. I don't see that it would make that much difference even if you removed it all. I sincerely doubt if you will get it down to ...

I agree with Glen and Randy. Sometimes there are "spots" that show this silvery "fishscale" even when you do everything right. Once you get some coats of varnish over the top of it, it won't be as noticable. Other than that, which is minor, it looks great. :applause I really like...

Hey Kent, the wait is 20 min. AFTER the fiberglass is wet out, but BEFORE the saturated fiberglass/epoxy starts to kick. Then it's squeegied only enough to push the glass tight to the hull and prevent too many runs. The wait could be longer/shorter depending on curing time. With RAKA 305/127 and 75-...
