Re: bowline hole

I'm thinking about using a 1/4" piece of hardwood epoxied into the hull as opposed to a solid hardwood tube. I think it would look better although I understand it's not as strong.

Does anyone have a feeling on whether this would be too weak for tie-up in slow moving wat

Re: when is a canoe design a new design?

Hi, US law is complicated for stuff like this. I have no idea about UK copyright/IP law. But I think common sense and morality are more important than legal specifics here. There aren't a lot of designers out there making wooden boat designs for hobbyists. Supporting them is more important than what...

Re: bead and cove before or after scarfing?

I used used 12' boards to build a 13' Rob Roy and ended up doing quite a lot of scarfing. One challenge of scarfing before milling is that if your scarfed joint isn't perfectly straight, it may get hung up in the router when milling. I did about half of the scarfs before milling and half after milli...

Re: First timer questions on machining planking

A board foot is 1" x 12" by 12". So 50 board feet of 1x4x1 boards at 16' roughly translates to about 9 1x4 boards. If you're buying rough lumber, you'll potentially need to resaw it and definitely will need to use a surface planer. I got pretty cheap lumber (rough 2x4s), resawed it, a...

Re: Vertical stripes

I just finished epoxying for the first time so my experience is limited. However, after the first coat, as long as the stripes aren't very thick, it should all get evened out by the third coat. I found that you have to squegee pretty aggressively during the first coat. I still had some lines but I f...

Re: help with crack filling

How thick was the epoxy? Was it a peanut butter consistency such that it would hold it's shape? What did you thicken it with? It sounds like your epoxy may not have been thick enough and the wood absorbed it. Otherwise light sanding with 80 grit would have taken it off. I wouldn't worry about it as ...

Re: Bubbles in the third coat

Thanks, the bubbles are very small so I hope light sanding will do the trick.

Bubbles in the third coat

I glassed the exterior of the hull yesterday. I'm very happy with the results modulo a few bubbles that seem to have formed at the top of the hull. They are very tiny but still noticable if you look very carefully. After a bit of forum searching, it looks like I should have stuck around for an hour ...

Re: Tips on removing a deep staple

I should add, I still have no idea how this happened. Of the 1000+ staples I put in, none of the others even came close to going this deep. Must have been bad luck.

Re: Tips on removing a deep staple

Thanks for the suggestions. My magnets were apparently not strong enough and since it was below the wood, there was no way to get it out without bruising the wood around it. I haven't shaped this part of the hull yet (I haven't shaped the stems as I'm waiting for the brass bead to arrive) but after ...

Is your canoe design asymmetric? If it is, then there certainly could be a difference.

Tips on removing a deep staple

Hi, I just finished cutting a center line and started closing up the other end. In my excitement, I think I stapled a plan into the inner stem instead of the last station mold. As a result, the staple has gone about 1/16" below the wood. Does anyone have any tips for getting it out with minimal...
