Re: Alternate Wood ?

Thanks Gents,

I'm finishing off my first build now but I think I'll give it a go with Jelutong or a mix of cedar and Jelutong on the next one and see how it goes.

Alternate Wood ?

Just wanted to see if anyone has had experience using JELUTONG for canoe building? I came into possession of over 460 board feet of jelutong and need to so something with it. I know it's normally used for carving and pattern making but I see the characteristics of jelutong are similar to cedar and b...

Re: Dings

Thanks for the info Phil, Obviously I haven't logged in for a while. I had to put my project on hold, load the unfinished canoe on my truck and move from South Florida to San Antonio TX. I had several people ask about my conoe and had on gentleman actually offer to buy it. Sure did wonders to my mot...

Re: Dings

Thanks Rod. "Bruised Cloth". sounds about right. I had 5 such dings so, I've sanded, taped around them and just applied the resin. Fairly easy to repair but those bruises sure do hurt. I was beginning to think I did something terribly wrong with the cloth and resin. I'll be posting my less...

Dings

I have a newbie question... I am almost finished with my first build, fiberglass is all in, gunnels, yoke and decks. I am almost ready to start the final sanding for the first layer of varnish. I had a mishap with a wayward clamp and got a ding or couple dings inside the hull. I will do the repair b...

Re: Caned my seats !

Congrats Chipper, I just started caning the seats for a prospector I'm building. First time builder. This is my fist time caning anything and also purchased my materials from Perkins. I had trouble with the diagonal strands but I see my mistake. I didn't double up on a couple holes where I should ha...

Re: Think I built my last canoe

Gary, I'm new to this, building my first canoe and have only posted one question on the forum. However the camaraderie here on the forum is amazing so I want to say the best of luck to you. My prayers are with you. I also love motorcycles, have an old '75 Norton I rebuilt. I don't live near you but ...

Re: Prospector Stem bevel and station seven

Thanks a bunch Randy. You confirmed what I was thinking. I thought about adding a 1/4" to the upper 6 inches of station 7 but your suggestion of just doing without it seems like the most logical choice. I have to keep reminding myself that it's an art and not a science. Again, thanks a bunch. F...

Prospector Stem bevel and station seven

Hello all, I'm a first time builder. I purchased the plans for the Prospector and have been following Canoecraft as well as a couple other books and lots of internet time/research. I build the strong-back, forms, stems and started planking, almost at the bilge turn. Here is my problem. Looking at pa...
