Seat question prior to caning

So, my original front seat for my canoe finally broke, and I've made up the frame for the replacement seat. Sad, I know, but I suspected this day would come from the first time I took it out. The plans I had didn't talk at all about how "hefty" to make the seat frames, and I made my front ...

99% complete!!

I've only posted a few questions in here, but I have certainly browsed nearly every topic in this forum and the information has been absolute gold! I really appreciate all the information presented here, its been a great help. After entirely too long, my boat is 99% complete! Only thing left to do i...

Re: Seat frame problem

Rod, thanks for the kind words! I have not used a tapered drill bit, mine are all just straight. I thought I used a large enough bit, but I think like Sedges said, my screws were a bit too stout for the simple function I need from them. I'll be epoxying the piece back together and filling the hole w...

Seat frame problem

Posted on here a while back, and I was hoping to have a finished boat by now so that I could show her off. I'm a first year dental student, and since I didn't quite finish the boat before starting school, progress is even slower now. I'm so close, but school comes first. Anywho, my last step really ...

Another varnish question, sorry!

So I put my 3 coats on the outer hull, I'll give pictures this time! Anyway, it didnt come out as perfect as I had hoped. In maybe 7 or 8 spots along the gunnel, inside of an inch, there are streaky spots where the varnish was too thin on my brush so it didnt really coat and make things smooth like ...

Re: Varnish cure time?

The last coat had been on for roughly a week maybe? I cant remember honestly, but it was around a week. I'll keep waiting and do like you said, sanding with a high grit paper later. Do you just take a cloth and rub over the sanded area when you're done, Mr. Miagi style, wax on wax off? :laughing I d...

Re: Varnish cure time?

Sorry for leaving that out! I am using Epifanes high gloss. I have 3 coats on there right now. I waited about 24 hours between coats when applying. The first coat was no longer tacky, but I tried scratching it with my fingernail near a stem just to check, and it peeled a little so I waited another d...

Varnish cure time?

I put my last coat of varnish on the outer hull on Sunday and its been sitting in my garage for a week in the wonderful warmth of this Texas summer :) The garage is part of a building so it doesnt get nearly as hot as a stand alone garage often seen in apartment complexes. I was showing the boat to ...

Re: Varnish Process

Good to know, thanks guys! I have 2 lamps set up just as you described, shining along the length of the hull. I think I'll probably sand the first coat tomorrow morning just for kicks, do the second coat and then once the second is no longer tacky (and it comes out all fine) then go ahead and do the...

Re: Varnish Process

Applying the next coat of varnish without sanding, is it easy to see where your wet line is? Applying it to the sanded hull, seeing your wet line is a no brainer but with the gloss of the previous coat of varnish I'm curious how easy it is to follow.

Varnish Process

Being a member of various internet forums, I'm very aware of the search function and have seen many members get flamed for asking questions that could be answered with a search. In my defense, I tried searching with various "phrases" but cant seem to find a good answer to what I'm looking ...

Re: First paddle.....sort of

paddle is coming along nicely. Having never done this before, my blade seems to still be a little thick up near the stem..........i think. I'm really not sure since I dont have plans that I'm going by to build this. I realize every paddle is unique in its own way. I want to make sure from a "st...

Re: Attaching the Yoke a different way

Thanks for the responses! Since my inwales are already installed, going the M&T route would be tricky. It can be done I see as you did with the thwart, but like you also said this joint will have quite a bit of stress on it and since it will be the only cross support, I think I'm going to go wit...

First paddle.....sort of

My first attempt at making a bent shaft paddle ended with a twisted shaft and a frustrated me. I had seen pictures of someones build, but it didnt have much in the way of wording to describe the build and rather than get a book I just figured I would give it a go. I missed probably the most importan...

Attaching the Yoke a different way

I know the traditional way to install the yoke is under the gunnels with bolts and such. Would there be any real drawbacks or problems installing like this? http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk100/casey_cazes/Canoe%20Build/IMG_2893_zps23ff9692.jpg This is one of my grab handles on each end. I've ro...
