Re: Plank Ripping Sizes

I've only built one strip canoe ... so, grain of salt, but, next time around I'll likely use 1/2" wide strips for the tight curve of the tumblehome. I figure the extra time spent stripping will be partially offset by the reduction of sanding time to arrive at a fair curve.

Re: Edensaw Woods

Edensaw is a candy store ... awesome. Make sure they understand you're building a strip boat or they may very well quote you on vertical grain, air-dried boat lumber ($$).
The flat-sawn lumber you're looking for should make an easy request.

Good luck and have fun,

Re: Squeegeeing alternative?

Mark,
After a rather comedic attempt at rounding up blue shop towels (3 stores w/o stock) I went with the squeegee after all. I plan to start another build by the first of the year and will try this technique when the time comes. Thanks

Re: Squeegeeing alternative?

Well, a busy week has kept me out of the shop but I'll be giving this technique a go soon using Resin Research epoxy (2000 w/ 2100 slow hardener)

Wish me luck,

Re: Squeegeeing alternative?

Thanks again Mark! I just laid down my skim coat and it revealed that I have a little touch up work to do before the lam. I should get the glass down in the next 2-3 days and I'll report back. I have to go to West Marine for primer tomorrow and I imagine they'll have the blue towels.

Re: Squeegeeing alternative?

Whitworks,
Thank you very much for this tip. I was considering light weight peel ply for my interior lam but after seeing your pics, I'll definitely save some money and use paper towels (peel ply starts at about 4-5 bucks yard if memory serves)

'm not sure about naming my upcomming canoe project, but if I ever build the low displacement canoe yawl of my dreams, it'll be named "Shoalier Than Thou"

Absolutely stunning! Feature strips are one thing, but your work is truly artistic.

So, I log in here (newbie) to congratulate KARKAUAI on a beautiful job. Well done say I ! The trouble is, I soon see the "teardrop" link. How will I ever get a boat built with such distractions? Can my marriage withstand the pressure? Do the kids really need more than one meal a day? These...

While not one of the noted possible choices, I have really enjoyed my DeWalt variable speed R/O and would certainly reccomend it to others. I've also had good experiences with every Porter Cable product that I've tried and until that changes, I'll not hesitate to buy their products by name alone. Se...
