Re: interior epoxy advice

Hi Ben, This is probably too late, but I never sand runs, get a good carbide scraper and just flatten then ... sanding out a run is tricky because the sander will wander into the surrounding area. A decent carbide scraper will save you a lot of time and trouble, something like this is great https://...

Re: New Solo Canoe - Freedom 15'3" and 16'2"

The only issue with "calculating" the seat placement, is that it assumes the canoe is built complete uniformity. The advice I would give, get the glass on the inside done .... get the gunnels on, then worry about determining the COB. The easiest way I have found is to just cut a stick to l...

Re: Fiberglassing the hull

Hi Andy, The Bear Mountain Building series is a good source of info, if you haven't found them, the link is here : https://www.bearmountainboats.com/pages/videos It is important to realize that all these videos and comments are for the environment they are working in and with the experience the film...

Re: Lofting the Bobs special

Hi Frederik, I did a post on lofting canoes from the CanoeCraft tables, hopefully the answer is there, you can find the link here: http://buildersforum.bearmountainboats.com/viewtopic.php?p=31740&hilit=lofting+canoecraft#p31740 The stem sheer values was confusing, but there is a section with pic...

Re: Fiberglassing the hull

Hi Andy, I haven't actually mixed and matched epoxies, but everything I have read suggests that is a valid strategy. Another point to consider with the inside hull, is only apply 1 fill coat and leave the interior hull dimpled, a bit of texture there is better for traction so you don't slip on a sli...

Re: Planking the bottom past the stems and I'm having alignment issues.

The shimming process for alignment, should be a "one and done" affair (although it may take several strips). So if your adjustment isn't "holding" then the issue is something else. The angles the strips come into the center-line look symmetrical and the cut looks OK. Strip width ...

Re: Planking the bottom past the stems and I'm having alignment issues.

Marks for including a pic, but it really doesn't demonstrate the issue you are having. I have found that the main culprit when the planks go out of alignment is that the last 3"-4" of self processed planks are not true. That is, as they clear the last featherboard/hold down, they tend to m...

Re: Shaping the Stems

I find it is too easy to over do the shaping with a plane or spoke shave ... so I just use a sanding stick. The stem shaping is covered here on my last build thread https://www.canoetripping.net/threads/light-weight-solo-tripper-build.105054/post-105619 I find this is the easiest way to get those su...

Re: Mold Fair? & Upper/Lower Center Line - Bob’s Special

I use Google Photos, free and works fine and it doesn't have the bad history that PB does. If you go to the beginning of that thread I linked you, it is a detailed build, start to finish, posted specifically for newer builders, showing build techniques. Other experienced builders also chime in with ...

Re: Mold Fair? & Upper/Lower Center Line - Bob’s Special

Please ask as required, we can keep thrashing this about till it gets where it needs to be. I just hope the idea that you can basically lift that form a bit in the corner to adjust the top alignment without losing the bottom alignment, is clear. Even on the most carefully aligned SBs, this can be re...

Re: Mold Fair? & Upper/Lower Center Line - Bob’s Special

I can get at the Photos, but I would recommend you avoid PB at all costs Suggestions 1) if you don't have a copy of CanoeCraft, think about getting one, there is a whole step by step section on setting up the molds 2) the Strongback has to be marked with a center line and the station line locations ...

Re: Mold Fair? & Upper/Lower Center Line - Bob’s Special

Hi Ryan, When checking for fair, the batten will likely only ever hit flat on the middle mold, on all the rest the batten is going to be curving to the bow/stern, so it should only hit the corner of each mold, nearest the end it is going to. Those mold edges run parallel with the the strongback, whi...

Re: Wood for first build

Hi Charles, You are in what i consider the prime area for getting wood, finding those wood sources is definitely one of the biggest challenges IMO, for that first build. When you consider your build, one of the first things you need to think about, is what you intend to do with the boat. That list o...
