Just want to confirm the order of things

Hi all, I have both the hull and deck glassed and just want to confirm the order of the major steps from here to the end so I don't run into issues. I also have a couple of supplier questions. 1. Rudder Install Part 1 (cables) 2. Cut openings for hatch and combing 3. Install foot pedals (for rudder)...

Re: Fiberglassing for the first time

Thanks, just tried it and I can see how that will work better (using a cabinet scraper). Will take me a half day, I have a lot of runs. but it does find the high spots.

Horrible Runs

Jim Boy did I blow it. After a week, I lightly sanded to get the air bubbles out and then foam brushed on the epoxy for the final coat. I warmed the epoxy a little by placing the can in some warm water so it wasn't too think. I don't think the foam brush spread it out very evenly and although I tipp...

Re: Fiberglassing for the first time

Jim, Thanks. We finished in couple of days but I have air bubbles, a couple of spots where the weave of the cloth is peaking through, and some imperfections (an occasional cloth fiber) that I will take off with the razor blade (thanks for that advice). All in all, I am pleased with how it went. I am...

Re: Fiberglassing for the first time

Jim and Brian, Thanks so much for all your help. Some really great ideas and I think I have this all worked out mentally. My brother is driving down from Michigan (I live in VA) so he will be my able body trusted assistant :-) We have 3 full days and hopefully the last day is golf. Will probably kee...

Re: Fiberglassing for the first time

Jim, Extremely helpful. Yes, I have some very small gaps (not too many). I did not use the bead and cove method, but went staples free with the glue gun technique. Probably wont do that again. Oh well, lesson learned. So, I'll put down the seal coat and pick up some foam brushes. Do i need roller pa...

Jim
Thanks, I have the foam rollers, do you use the wet out? I was going to use them after that.

Fiberglassing for the first time

Hi all, I am preparing to fiberglass the hull of my tandem next weekend (3 days). My plan is 6mm cloth with an extra 4mm expedition layer since it is a tandem (20' long) and would benefit from the extra stability. I was wondering how long will I have to benefit from the chemical bond after the resin...

Re: Fairing a hull

Thanks much. I will continue to strip and worry about the unevenness when it is ready to sand then. I think I got a bit impatient in my desire for perfection :-) Once stipped, I'll hit it with the block plane and use the metal ruler strategy to find any low spots. Then I'll fair with a fairing board...

Fairing a hull

Hi all, I am finally stripping. :laughing Took 60 hours to get to this point but what fun. It appears I may have some low spots from slight uneven widths of strips (had to cut them on a Shopsmith the freezing cold) and then got carried away trying to fix them with a plan. I understand I can fair wit...

Re: How much fiberglass

Rod, I watched many of your videos last night (up through fiberglassing). Thank you for sharing. I am at the sheer clamp installation stage so looking forward to finally stripping. The fact that you are not using decals etc. makes what you have done all that much more remarkable IMHO. I think what w...

Re: How much fiberglass

Rod, I just wanted to say your boats are beautiful! I was wondering, would you be willing to share your secret on what appears to be gorgeous inlays (striping, designs, orcas's, etc.)? Are these decals laid in at some point in the fiberlass process or actual wood inlays? If decals, is there any part...
