Re: My "Prospecter Ranger" build
Patrick I could send some pictures but you have to message me your email. I can tell you that my deck was built in place and the design was taken from the deck of an old Hackercraft or Chriscraft Runabout. Planks with a caulking joint between. I milled my deck planks to 1/4 inch by 1 1/2 and the Dar...

I poured alot of thought into every step of my build and would be happy to share any construction details I might have. I dont know any other way to show you except with pictures that I left out of the slide show. U...

Re: Inwale Install??!
Hi Jesse, The Hiawatha has beautiful lines much like the old birch bark canoes. I had a problem bending my mohogany inwales and outwales and i built the "Ranger". You'll hear on this forum that the ranger has a slight up sweep on its sheer and the inwale would follow the sheer easily but I...

Thanks Hugh,
I hope to take it out this Saturday. The weather will be great and the lake will be calm.

Re: My "Prospecter Ranger" build
Thanks Brian I didn't use the staple application and it took me over 2 months to strip it out. I enjoyed every bit of it. The gunwales were prebent because the mahogany would not follow the sheer. I also used titebond 3 on every part of the Ranger. You can't find a better forum than this one. I'm al...

Re: My "Prospecter Ranger" build
Thanks Jim That means a lot. The build was fun but the resin and cloth was a big challenge. I have never tried it before but I read every post on the subject and learned a lot in the actual process. I think I am going to try the " Rice Lake Skiff "next. It looks versatile and I like to row...

Seat Positions
I'm working on finishing the seats and decks of my Ranger. I can't decide on the height of my seats. if I put them to high the canoe will be top heavy and have more of a tendency to roll and to low, well that is the question. Also is the inwale strong enough to hold 200 lb buy 4- 1/4 20 bolts. The i...

SIX 10 Adhesive
Has anyone used this adhesive filler on their canoe or Kayak. I used it for a fillet on my inner stems and it worked great . It goes on like the clear silicone you buy in the store. I am thinking about using it to fasten my gunwales. Its sold by West Systems and can be used in a regular caulking gun...

Re: material for gunnels
Don, The answer to your question about red elm being useful for you gunnels is yes. Its perfect. The grain and strength are very similar. I have made the mistake of taking elm for ash on several occasions. I am at that stage of building the inwales and outwales for my Ranger. I'm using a mahogany bu...

Re: Beveling Inwales
Alick Am I reading CC correctly. It says to taper the ends of the inwales to 3/8 in on the Hull Side of the Inwale. The key words are "Taper the Hull Side Of the inwale".

Re: Beveling Inwales
So Alick if I bevel my 1/8 in on the hull side of the inwale I should be good all the way, end to end and the crown on the long decks im making will work almost perfectly into the tapered ends of the inwales. That is what I was steering towards. Nice Deck by the way. Is that wrc.

Beveling Inwales
Im building the Ranger. What a beautifully shaped canoe. Looking at the tumble home and how severe it is I measured it to be 1/8 th inch in 3/4. That would work until station 3 or 4 and then the inwale would start sloping up going towards the ends. Is this a common way to shape the inwales. After as...
