I had an oily rag get put on some strips I have ready to install, there has been some staining of the wood - is it possible to clean this or is the wood too porous to clean.
Thanks

I realize once the canoe is stripped the builder wants to remove what ever they used to hold the strips to the moulds to start faring the hull, is there a way to stabilize the newly bent/twisted strips in the hull like heat or steam to allow them to relax to the mould shapes? I have read in this for...

Mould precision
How precise do you cut your station moulds? I have laid them out on 3/4" particle board, cut them with a jig saw and sanded to the line with a sander. When I run my hand along the finished edge it still feels wavy, I checked with a batten and the edge varies about a .040" (1mm) do I need t...

In reply to Rick's comment; Weighing is a very accurate way to mix small amounts of epoxy, I am not sure about the epoxies used in building canoes but in the aerospace industry the epoxies have different ratios depending on whether you are mixing by volume (like a pump or measuring cup) or by weight...

Plane question
I am looking to buy a block plane to fair the outside of my canoe and general canoe building use.
What type is better, the low angle or standard type?
My budget dictates the less expensive types like Stanley ~ $60-$80 range.
thanks, this is a great forum,
Dan

Bead and cove bit question
I am looking to buy a 1/4" bead and cove bit to route the strip edges for a cedar strip canoe, Lee Valley has two different types. One type is the combined bead and cove where you raise or lower the bit to cut the profile you want. The second type is a separate bead and cove bit; these have a m...

Setting up bulkheads question.
I am going to be setting up the bulkheads for my 17' Freedom on the strongback, if I align the forward face of each bulkhead with the station line how do I align the stern bulkhead and the stern stem form? If I align the front of the final bulkhead with the station line and butt the stem form to it,...

MGS epoxy
I work on helicopters and we use MGS (Martin G Scheutler/made in Germany) 335 resin, it is an aircraft grade laminating resin and needs to be cooked after a cold cure to reach its full potential (8 hrs @ 50C/122F) it is fairly cheap and in tests I've done it has performed well. It comes with a fast ...
