Sanding between Ribs

Just about to start of my Fall project and need to sand the inside of an older cedar canvas I am fixing up.

Just wanted to know if anyone had any tips or techniques on sanding in between the ribs.

Thanks

My only comment is if the outwales get rot and they are epoxied on they are a major pain to remove. I just did this on a 16 yr old canoe. Some black rot got in the ash outwales. I basically had to remove the plugs and screws - easy. then cut down to the hull with a jig saw every 4 - 6 inches and bre...

Well it cured pretty well. I think the warm weather, the heater and the bigger batches worked.

Now for some sanding then varnish and finishing.

Thanks for all the help and input much appreciated.

Sorry for not posting. Well some did not end up curing. I think it was due to a number of things. 1. Low temps and 2. A small batch at the end. I had to remove the uncured stuff which was a PITA. I put on the final coat yesetrday and cranked the propane heater till about 11 p.m. last night. Still a ...

Yeah I read the faq's. It didn't seem to say either way whether it was a factor of time at low tem p or solely a factor of temp. Maybe I can warm it up in my other garage that is attached to the house. Hmmm my wife's gonna like that on two fronts 1. Sticky canoe in the garage and 2. Helping me move ...

Will it ever Cure?

Applied a second coat of system three clear coat to the inside of the canoe I am repairing. The first coat went on great. I think it took about 24 hours to cure. This was during August in Toronto. The second coat went on this Saturday Afternoon and is still tacky 3 days later. I live in Toronto and ...

Goy my system three clear coat from composites canada. The product is good but the people on the phone had no idea about canoe building and screwed up the order 2 times.

Major pain. :sad

Favourite Container for Mixing Epoxy

Just wondering what everyone used to mix their epoxy in.

I was wondering if disposable cups etc was the way to go.

I used some foam cups but they caved when the epoxy heated up in them.

Thanks for the input.

Cedar Canvas Sanding Question

I need to sand down the insides and gunnels of a couple of cedar canvas canoes. Does any one have any tips on the best way to sand the ribs and the in between sections of the planks. Also should I epoxy the gunnels and varnish over the top for durability? These canoes were recovered about 5 years ag...

Nice looking canoe. I prefer the brass as I use my canoe hard. I had a look at my keel down below where bands end. There was some wear there. You can replace a keel more easily than a stem.

Also the shiny brass looks nice flahing in the sun.

Epoxy Coverage Calculation.

I am repairing the inside of my cedar epoxy canoe. The canoe has a number of cracks in the floor. Ron Frenette recommended that I put down a football shaped peice of cloth in the bottom and epopxy in place. The cloth is approx 4 metres by 1 metre. I estimate the total area around three sq metres. Wh...
