Seat height and angle

Hi everyone, its been a while but I'm about to hang the seats on my Kipawa and a few questions have arisen in my epoxy addled brain...Ted's book says between 9-1/2 and 10-1/2 inches under the seat, so 10" sounds like a good compromise! Any reason to go higher or lower? And should the top of the...

Treatment of inner stems before glass?

Just a quick question on how folks handle the inner stems prior to fiberglass - do you round the edges, chamfer the edges, taper along the length, carve the story of your last hunt, what? Was thinking of hitting it with a quarter round router bit as far as I can reach - take the edge off, so to spea...

Advice needed re second coat of epoxy

I just made it past the first coat of epoxy!! But by the time I finished the bow the stern was basically dry (pretty hot, low 90's)- and frankly I'm about done emotionally so fine with waiting for second and third coats. :laughing So my question is how to rough up the first coat for the mechanical b...

FIberglassing the Stems?

Sneaking up on the fiberglass stage and am wondering if I'm interpreting things correctly: as I'm reading it, the glass is trimmed at the stems when the epoxy firms up - and there is no effort to wrap the glass around the upright portion of the stems. And if that's correct then the upright portion o...

Re: E glass vs S glass?

Wow Jim, that's fascinating, thanks for posting!! Please keep us updated, I really enjoy seeing new approaches. I had a long conversation with someone at Sweet Composites today and his advice was basically to bite the bullet and use the S-glass, which I think I will do on the outside. Frankly at thi...

Re: E glass vs S glass?

Brian, Thanks for the thoughts. At this point I'm going to stay with the 6 oz cloth - I've read a lot of guys looking for weight savings saying its overkill for these boats, but the foam core will drive the primary weight savings so I'm okay with the 6 oz. cloth. I had read about the S-glass being t...

E glass vs S glass?

Just wanted to ask this question in case anyone has a strong opinion. I'm attempting (note the choice of words) to build a canoe using foam as the core. Of course its much more flexible than wood, but I've done some test panels and once the fiberglass and epoxy is on its very strong. I've used both ...

Re: S-glass vs E-glass?

Jim, I got my S glass from Sweet Composites, only place I could find that had 60" S-glass. I was just doing a 1' x 2' panel but I didn't have any trouble wetting it out. Their Kevlar looks a little more expensive and in a 5 oz. instead of 6 oz. What would be the pros/cons of Kevlar, Carbon Fibe...

S-glass vs E-glass?

I'm playing around with using a different core material for my canoe (balsa or foam), neither of which are as dense as WRC, so I'm curious about S-glass vs E-glass. I've read that S-glass is much stronger, more abrasion resistant, etc. but it seems to be overkill for these canoes in the WRC version....

Re: Form placement question

Thanks Jim - also confirmed from another source. Not sure why that baffled me except that I got it in my head early on that all the forms would be centered on the 12" interval. Not a huge issue I'm sure but thanks for the help.

Re: Form placement question

...and because this boat is an asymmetrical design, the middle form is form 8 but the widest form (highest point) is form 9. So it seems that form 9 should be the one that straddles the line...???

Form placement question

I just want to be sure I have this right: the boat I'm building (Kipawa) has the forms at 12" intervals. The center form straddles the center line but the other forms are placed so that the side of the form toward the bow or stern is on the line. Other than the center form, the forms do not str...

Re: Water-based stain under epoxy?

You should be fine as long as the water has evaporated! Check Green Valley Boat's site, there's an article on there about staining with analine dyes (water based)
