Transporting Kayak
I've just finished my True North 19'3" kayak and have purchased some J-Rack carriers for my roof racks. Have received some mixed opinions/views on the best way to transport my kayak, without doing any damage. Some say cedar strippers should be attached to roof racks horizontal/flat in cradles, ...

Re: Dry Time for Epifanes varnish?
Brian, thanks for your reply. At this stage of the build, the little kid in me, is anxious to see the true glossy shine of both the hull and deck at the same time, but the common sense adult in me, is telling me to wait :thinking I'm looking forward to the completion of my kayak, and hoping to start...

Dry Time for Epifanes varnish?
I just finished up varnishing the hull of my True North this morning, and anxious to turn her over and start on the deck. I know dry time for Epifanes varnish says 24 hrs, but should I give it more time so finish on hull doesn't get marked in the cradles? (5 coats applied - 24hrs between each coat) ...

Cedar Sourcing in Halifax area.
Just finishing up my True North 19'2 kayak and getting ready to start my Ranger 15'. For the kayak I had used 4x4 various lengths for my strips and was a lot of work. Hoping to source some full length 16' western red cedar boards for this build, but not able to get here in PEI. I'm heading to Halifa...

Re: Epoxy Question
Thanks BellGuy5, What you just mentioned, is what I had in mind. I knew that when it came time to sanding that the hull, it would have some flex or give, if the forms were no longer in place. I thought that having the bulkheads in place would stiffen things up enough, that I could wait until the end...

Re: Epoxy Question
Hi Jesse, thanks for your reply. My concern is, if I wait 2 weeks to sand the hull before I flip kayak over and start stripping & glassing the top, I may run out of time to glass the inside of the hull & top. I'll have to get at packing up our house in preparation for moving and won't have m...

Epoxy Question
I just finished fibreglassing the hull, on my True North Kayak yesterday, and very pleased with result this morning, other than a couple small runs that I will scrape then sand out and very slight weave showing on sides. I think I'll apply a light 4th coat of epoxy, and will be good go. I'm now on b...

Re: True North XPD 19/3
I'm building the True North now, and just closing in the hull. For my strongback, I followed the instructions as per Kayak Craft for the frame, but I inserted a 24" section in the middle of the top, which gave me a 18' top. I just braced the over hang on each end to keep it level with the rest ...

Re: Aligning Stem Molds
Hi Alick,
Thanks for your input. I thought I might try to straighten mold out with a bracket/batten before securing mold to strongback, although tight space limits what I can use. After that I'll just get it as close as I can.

Re: Aligning Stem Molds
Thanks Jim, I wasn't sure what impact it would have...in my mind, I said the same thing as you, 1/8" over 19' is pretty close. Being over tired with weary eyes, is not the best time to try an eyeball everything into alignment, so I just had to walk away last night and ask the question today, to...

Aligning Stem Molds
I'm a first time builder, all set to start my True North 19'3. Was attempting to align the stem molds on strongback last night, with string line in place, the bow stem mold seems to line up nicely with reference lines on strongback. However, when I adjust the stern stem mold to get the string line t...

Re: Any builders near Halifax, Nova Scotia?
Hey Halifax & Saint John, I'm live right between the two of you in PEI. I'm starting to build a True North 19'3" and is also my first build. I have molds already to go and just finished cutting strips from w. red cedar 4X4's, and some local eastern w.cedar boards made up of 8', 10' & 12...
